Feature Request: disable lock/unlock sounds

superded
edited April 2011 in Mac
Hi,

Recently in one of the Beta version, there was a lock/unlock sound problem. Since then it's been fixed but I think an option to disable 1Password sounds should be in the preferences menu.

There is already an option to disable animation therefore I think an option to disable sounds in 1Password should alson be available.

I listen to music while working and hearing the lock sound "after a while" or when the screen saver kicks in is a bit annoying. I already know it's going to lock so no need for the sound. I understand that some need it but giving the option to the users is always a good improvement.

Keep up the good work.

This suggestion has come up from time to time. (Although, I must say, good timing bringing it up right now.) <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Thank you for letting us know it would be useful to you too. We will look into improving this in a future update!

    Cheers!

Yes, this is driving me up the wall!!!

    Please fix this.

Thanks for a great product otherwise.

I'm sorry, MemphisGeek, do you mean that the "repeated lock sounds" issue is occurring for you or that just the usual sounds when locking and unlocking are "driving you up the wall?"

Please let me know as the "lock sound monophony" should have been resolved many beta builds ago.

+1 for disabling the Lock/Unlock sounds. Happens all the time in Firefox 5 too and it get a tad annoying after about the fifth time.

Thank you for your consideration and all your hard work! 1Password is the only way to go!

    Hey DarkAthena,

    Thanks for the kind words. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Could you please clarify if the lock sounds are repeated in rapid succession or you just don't like hearing the sounds ever? If they are occurring at times other than when you unlock or lock 1Password, there may be an issue we need to resolve. Otherwise, I will just pass along your vote for the ability to disable the lock sounds.

    Please let me know. Thanks!
  • Since one of the recent 1Password updates on my Mac, I keep getting a sound effect like when 1Password is locking its key chain due to a timeout. This happens even when I'm not currently running the application, which is somewhat annoying. Is there any way to suppress any sound being generated from 1Password.app? I looked at the preferences, but without luck.

Welcome to the forums, Michael! I have merged your post with the appropriate feature request thread.

At this time it is not possible to turn the lock/unlock sounds off in 1Password, but this is something we are considering for the future.

As a side note, 1Password has a background agent that is always running which is what actually produces the lock/unlock sounds. It is unrelated to the main 1Password application window. 1PasswordAgent (the background process) needs to run in the background to interface with the browser extensions.

I will pass your vote for this along to the developers. Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with.

    Cheers,
  • I am using 1Password version 3.6.1, build 31057 (no beta version), and I don't hear an unlock sound during the first unlock of 1Password. That seems to be still a problem.

I have just the opposite. I don't have any sounds from 1P locking/unlocking. I remember them and I thought a previous version of 1P had an option to turn them off. Perhaps I turned it off and that setting has been carried over? I looked thru the plist settings file and didn't see an option for controlling sound playback so any idea why mine don't play?

At the risk of sounding like a jerk, are you sure your volume isn't muted? <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Just kidding, of course. At the moment the sounds are not present in Safari 5.1. Actually, I just found a bug related to this. Thanks for prompting me to investigate. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

If you unlock the Safari 5.1 extension it mutes all 1Password sounds until you lock or unlock the main application (or so it seems in my limited testing just now).
  • Please provide an option to disable all lock/unlock sounds. I also don't enjoy the sounds it makes when I sleep/wake my computer, etc.

Yes, I double-checked my volume levels when testing it. I tried locking/unlocking multiple times from Firefox 5 and the 1P application itself. I don't have Safari 5.1 but 5.0.5.
  • I have to agree that the sound is annoying especially while listening to music and the screen saver kicks in and you hear that click/lock sound. You can disable sounds from most software it should be the same with 1PAssword.

Please kick this request up the list.

    Thanks !

You almost snuck past me, but there is only one vote per person. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> I have nudged the devs on this, but I can't make any promises for when or if it will be an option.

Thanks for all of your feedback, folks!
  • I would really like to disable the locking sound when my computer goes to sleep or the screensaver goes on. The sounds is too similar to a dying hard drive click. In fact, that's what I thought the sound was at first and was all paranoid my hard drive was dying. I would really like to disable this feature in Preferences. Thank you!

I'd very much like the option to disable the locking sound. I'm almost embarrassed to say that I thought this was a very bad disk head parking sound on my Macbook on sleep, for you know the last 2 years... Upgrading to a SSD on a Macbook Air really made me go a little crazy, and I finally connected it with 1password locking sound. This is after searching "Macbook sleep clunk" a bunch of times. I mean I was really close to heading to the Apple store. Phew.

Anyway, hells yes to disabling the sound.

    Thanks.

I thought it was a bad hard drive, as well -- and so did the Apple genius who replaced the hard drive in my Mac, a few months ago. About 6 weeks ago, in another thread on this subject (which has since been locked), Dave from Agilebits wrote:

I will add a setting to allow the sound to be disabled.

Yet, despite 1P's frequent updates (which are greatly appreciated), this issue has yet to be addressed. I've been wondering when he intends to follow through.

Thanks for the feedback, guys! This is something that is asked for from time to time (mainly when there are problems with it playing too frequently), but with everything going on lately with 1Password 3.8, 3.9, and the new extensions this hasn't been implemented yet. I will remind Dave, but it may have to wait until things settle down a bit. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I personally barely notice it unless I have my volume turned way up, especially since 1Password only autolocks for me when I am away from the computer. Hopefully we can add this soon.
  • Hello,

please consider implementing this feature. The auto lock sound is driving me nuts! <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_beer.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(beer)' />

well, that's *YOUR* experience. i hear the thing frequently, and it drives me bonkers. and as i mentioned before, it led, through a sequence of events, to the loss of YEARS of data in my backups, because i -- and an apple genius -- both thought it was a sign of a failing hard drive! it's a horrific sound and should have been optional from the beginning.

can you please just tell us the location of the audio file in the package contents so that, at the very least, we can delete it (and therefore preventing it from playing) until you have an official fix? i've done this on numerous occasions with other apps, but have not been able to locate the audio file within the 1P package contents.

    thanks.

Do you mind me asking what version of 1P you are running there was an issue some time ago (months) where the lock sound would keep replaying and a release was made to fix the issue.

If its happening on a very frequent basis maybe you never received the update.
  • khad

The audio file is an OS X system sound. It is not distributed within 1Password itself but is part of the operating system.

As Tommy mentioned, there was an issue many months ago with a frequent locking sound, but that was resolved in a short time. If you are hearing the lock (or unlock) sound(s) often, there could either be a problem with your machine or your security settings in 1Password might simply not be configured for your needs. I'd love to help resolve the issue either way.

Adding an option to disable the sound effects may come to fruition, but just disabling the sound effect when there is a deeper issue going on seems a bit like applying an anesthetic to a foot with a nail through it rather than removing the nail. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Please let me know if you are hearing the sound unexpectedly (i.e. when 1Password should not be locking or unlocking in accordance with the security settings you have specified in Preferences > Security).

i was running 3.8.13 beta 1, which just updated to 3.8.13 today. it's not that it's playing more frequently than it should; it's that (unlike brenty, who said he "barely notices" it unless his volume is way up) i'm frequently *at* my computer when it plays, and my computer's volume *is* at about 70% which is fine for all other sounds, except this one.

bottom line: some of simply hate this sound, and we don't want it to play at all -- at any volume.

again, the question: where is the sound file located, please? i routinely remove OS X system sounds from:

    /System/Library/Components/CoreAudio.componet > [Show Package Contents] > /SharedSupport/SystemSounds

(that's the lion path; the pre-lion path was slightly different.) as a temporary fix, i'd simply remove that system sound, as i have a couple of others that i find annoying.

    hmmm.

Ok good on the version thats what I am on.

I like to notice it (sound)..... BUT sometimes it is loud, especially on my ears (which are getting a little more sensitive to certain sounds). I have issues going to my sons basketball games and the folks cheering. I almost need ear plugs. Drives me crazy.

Maybe an option to choose the sound to something easier on my ears or better yet ability to add out own sound, and also a on off switch for those of us who prefer that. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

It sounds like you just want to unhook your speakers. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

In all seriousness, I'm glad that there isn't an actual problem on you machine and that it is simply a personal preference. I don't know the location of the sound file offhand, but I'll try to find it.

  • Hi Agile Guys, thanks for looking into this!

The more I think about it - why does an application like 1password need sound effects at all? Looks like a design error to me.

    Hey Martin,

If it were only you (and the few other folks in this thread), we'd love to remove the sounds. In fact, we did this at one point. Enough folks about the lack of the unlocking/locking sounds that we added them back. A preference is something that I think we will add in the future, but I can't give a specific time frame.

Thanks for letting us know your opinion on the matter! I am actually sitting next to one of the co-founders as I type this and mentioned it to him directly.

    Cheers,
  • I'm going to also vote for this. Haven't seen it implemented yet and would love to! I'm an avid 1Password user on Mac, Windows, and iOS. Please add it!
