dropbox sync stuck loading remote encryption keys

Hello,

I have never been able to sync my iPhone4 and iPad2 using Dropbox. After the 1Password app does a login to Dropbox, and "locate the 1Password data file in Dropbox...", it becomes stuck in "Loading remote encryption keys ...".

All systems involved have up to date OS, patches and software/app versions. They get stuck "Loading remote encryption keys ..." over Edge, 3G and Wi-Fi.

I have 4 Macs that successfully sync their 1Password data via Dropbox. Dropbox works just fine on Max OS X laptops.

The iPhone4 and iPad2 in question seem to run Dropbox app just fine. When I run the Dropbox app, I see up to date files and up to date file content.

Telling the 1Password app to reset the "Dropbox account" sync information (i.e., Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset) does not help.

I can sync 1Password using the "Wi-Fi Sync" method. However, when I turn off the "Wi-Fi Sync" method and try syncing with Dropbox, the app becomes stuck in the "Loading the remote encryption keys" phase.

Please advise.

  • Hiya, chongo!

I think that the best place to start would be to rebuild your data file. To do this, please follow these steps:

On your Mac, launch 1Password and go to Help > Troubleshooting > Rebuild Data File...

Once it is done processing, wait for Dropbox to finish sync'ing the rebuilt data file. (You verify this by clicking on the Dropbox icon in the menubar at the top of the screen; if it says "All files up to date" you're good to go.)

Next, restart your iPhone and iPad by holding the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons until the Apple logo appears.

Then, launch 1Password on your iPhone and iPad and go to More > Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Reset, and select Start Over when prompted. (This will not affect your data, only your sync settings.)

Finally, reenter your Dropbox username and password, and the Master Password for the 1Password keychain stored in your Dropbox folder.
You should be all set. If you are still having trouble, please generate a Diagnostics Report (under Help > Troubleshooting in 1Password on your Mac) and email it to us at support@agilewebsolutions.com so we can take a closer look at what might be wrong, and please be sure to include a link to this forum thread so we can make the connection. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

  • I too am having this problem with a new iPad2 and followed the procedure below for rebuilding the database but still not connecting via dropbox and loading the database in the iPad. I have a iPad 1 too that works fine. Both have the software installed and up to date. I notice that I get no indication of "files are up to date" in the menu icon. Also 1 password on the iPad has only settings>Sync>Dropbox sync>(on)>sync now. Nothing about start over and no "More" link in the side bar. Need Help here. Thanks

Please also see if you can access Dropbox website.

Amazon had a few issues yesterday and Dropbox is using Amazon services, as far as I know.
  • Yes!! Thanks for the help guys. Guess Drop box log in was the issue!

Well, I tried it several times ... no success.

    Here is what I did:

    0) on iPad2:

    Password app -> More -> Settings -> Sync -> Dropbox -> Account -> Reset -> Start Over

    Quit iPad2 on MacBook Pro

    Power off iPad2

    1) on iPhone4:

    Password app -> More -> Settings -> Sync -> Dropbox -> Account -> Reset -> Start Over

    Quit 1Password on MacBook Pro

    Power off iPhone4

    2) Quit Dropbox on all hosts (including the MacBook Pro)

Quit 1Password on all hosts (including the MacBook Pro)

    3) Start 1Password on MacBook Pro

    ((Enter Master Password))

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Rebuild Data File

    Press Continue

((Wait while it rebuilds 549 keys))

    Press OK

    4) Start DropBox on MacBook Pro

((While while it is updates some +570 files -- finished about 5 minutes later))

    5) Power on iPad2

    ((Wait for it to boot))

    ((Enter Passcode))

    6) Launch 1Password on iPad2

    ((Enter Unlock Code))'

Settings -> Dropbox (which is OFF) -> Dropbox sync ON

((Enter Dropbox Email and Dropbox password))

    Click Next

((1Password does a login to Dropbox))

((Displays "locate the 1Password data file in Dropbox…"))

((Displays "Loading remote encryption keys …"))

NOTE: After 30 minutes, the spinning lines are still going and

it still displays "Loading remote encryption keys …"

    7) Power on iPhone4

    ((Wait for it to boot))

    ((Enter Passcode))

Turn off Wi-Fi (just to test loading over 3G))

    8 ) Launch 1Password on iPhone4

    ((Enter Unlock Code))

More -> Settings -> Dropbox (which is OFF) -> Dropbox sync ON

    ((Enter Master Password on iPhone))

    Click Next

((Enter Dropbox Email and Dropbox password))

    Click Next

((1Password does a login to Dropbox))

((Displays "locate the 1Password data file in Dropbox…"))

((Displays "Loading remote encryption keys …"))

NOTE: After 1 hour, the spinning lines are still going on both the iPhone4 & iPad2

and they both still display "Loading remote encryption keys …"

I will EMail the Diagnostics Report as well as a link to this forum.

  • Hey there, chongo.

I'm sorry you were not successful. As Roustem suggested above, could you verify that you can log in to the Dropbox website? Thanks for sending the DR and the forum link. We will have to take a look at this if it is not a server issue.

    Hi,

I am able to login to Dropbox. I was able to add files in a temp directory and see them show up on the MacBook Pro, iPhone4 and iPad2. Dropbox is working well.

BTW: I use Dropbox to sync 1Password between 4 accounts on 2 Macbook hosts just fine. Changes propagate across Mac laptops just fine.

It is the iPhone and iPad that have never synced using Dropbox.

All apps and OS' are up to date.

Thanks for sending your Diagnostics Report, Landon! I sent you an email but wanted to reply here as well.

I was able to determine from the report that your Dropbox folder has been renamed (ever so slightly) to "DropBox" (with an uppercase "B" instead of lowercase) which is preventing 1Password from writing the pointer file it needs to write in order for Dropbox syncing to work in our mobile apps. The pointer file is not used by our desktop applications which is why Mac-to-Mac syncing is functioning just fine for you.

As I mentioned in a much older thread:
Dropbox does actively try to prevent users from renaming the folder. There is actually not an interface to rename the folder from with the Dropbox application itself, and if you move the Dropbox folder from within Dropbox preferences, the folder will be renamed "Dropbox." So, I'm not saying right or wrong, but it would appear that even the Dropbox application tries to prevent renaming the folder as best it can.
To resolve the issue, please quit 1Password and Dropbox on your Mac and then rename your "DropBox" folder to "Dropbox" (with a lowercase "b"). Relaunch Dropbox and 1Password.

Now try syncing your iOS devices. Things should be working smoothly now. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

Well, that was a very good guess ... and a detection of a subtile effect. I'm not sure why the folder was named DropBox in the first place ... I must have created it by hand a long time ago.

BTW: On the other MacBook the folder was named Dropbox.

With much hope I did as you suggested ... but no joy ... the 1Password Pro app is still stuck in "Loading remote encryption keys ...". <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

Just in case some strange internal was hanging around I then tried the following:

    0) exited the 1Password Pro app from the iPad2 and the iPhone4

deleted the 1Password Pro app from the iPad2 and the iPhone4

Powered down the iPad2 and the iPhone4

    1) Quit Dropbox on all Macbooks

    Quit 1Password on all Macbooks

    2) I verified (using ls) that the directory is named ~/Dropbox (and NOT ~/DropBox) on ALL Macbooks

I double verified that DropBox is gone using find ( find / -name DropBox -ls 2>/dev/null )

    3) I started 1Password on the main Macbook (planck)

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Clear Cache

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Reset folder permissions

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Rebuild Data FIle

    Quit 1Password

    4) Started Dropbox on the main Macbook

((waited Dropbox had synced all files -- about 8 minutes))

I restarted 1Password on the main Macbook

I logged into the Dropbox web site

On the Macbook I created the file ~/Dropbox/tmpdrop/RMME.fizzbin

I verified via the Dropbox web interface that tmpdrop/RMME.fizzbin existed

I went into the Account -> My Computers and unlinked the iPhone and iPad

    5) I booted the iPad2

Using the AppStore app, I installed 1Password pro app on the iPad2

While I was waiting of the app to download, I started the Dropbox app

Because the iPad2 was unlinked form this account, I had to re-enter the Dropbox pw

I verified that the Dropbox app on the iPad2 could see the tmpdrop/RMME.fizzbin file

Using the browser on the Macbook, I used Account -> My Computers to verify that an iPad was linked to Dropbox

((By this time the 1Password Pro app was downloaded))

    6) I started the 1Password Pro app on the iPad2

    I selected New Database

I entered a master password and hint

    Settings -> Sync -> Dropbox -> ON

I entered the Dropbox Email and password

((1Password does a login to Dropbox))

((Displays "locate the 1Password data file in Dropbox…"))

((Displays "Loading remote encryption keys …"))

((After a few minutes I noted that the Wi-Fi had very little traffic on it))

    7) I booted the iPhone4

Using the AppStore app, I installed 1Password pro app on the iPhone4

While I was waiting of the app to download, I started the Dropbox app

Because the iPhone4 was unlinked form this account, I had to re-enter the Dropbox pw

I verified that the Dropbox app on the iPhone4 could see the tmpdrop/RMME.fizzbin file

Using the browser on the Macbook, I used Account -> My Computers to verify that an iPhone was linked to Dropbox

((By this time the 1Password Pro app was downloaded))

    8 ) I started the 1Password Pro app on the iPhone4

    I entered an unlock code

    I entered a master password

    Settings -> Sync -> Dropbox -> ON

Next (the master password was set previously)

I entered the Dropbox Email and password

((1Password does a login to Dropbox))

((Displays "locate the 1Password data file in Dropbox…"))

((Displays "Loading remote encryption keys …"))

About 1 minute after step 8 (both the iPad2 and the iPhone4 still spinning loading remote keys), the Wi-Fi was seeing a packet every 4-5 seconds (i.e., nil traffic).

I let the iPad2 and iPhone4 try for about 45 minutes before giving up.

    What should I try next?

    Its gonna sound really absurd,

What DNS service do you use? ISP, DynDNS, OpenDNS ?

The reason I ask is I was running my DNS with DynDNS, which I use for DNS service for remote access. They have a DNS service for your router for filtering parental content etc. When i use there service my Dropbox connections from the iPhone and iPad fail at loading remote encryption keys. It has to be something to do with the Dropbox API. Computers have no trouble as the Dropbox client handles all the syncing

I used OpenDNS, for a while, and Now they are my DNS service of choice. In my case OpenDNS is far superior and I never have a problem loading encryption keys and or completing the sync. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

I really like DynDNS as I have so much stuff thru them, but unfortunately it fails me all the time. Therefor I always move back to OpenDNS.

My suggestion put there DNS ip's in your router and reboot if necessary. They are

    208.67.222.222

See if this change has any effect for you.

If it doesnt help you can always revert to what ever you had previously and or let the router pick them up from the ISP. If needed reboot

Well, you gave me another good and interesting suggestion. Thanks ... however ...

FYI: The Macbooks that use Dropbox AND sync 1Password successfully were using the same DNS as the iPad2 and the iPhone4. The iPad2 and the iPhone4 use Wi-Fi from an Airport Extreme which is using Speakeasy's DNS (216.231.41.2 and 64.81.79.2). The Macbooks also use Speakeasy's DNS (216.231.41.2 and 64.81.79.2). Moreover, the Dropbox app on the iPad2 and the iPhone4 are able to login to my Dropbox account and access files.

Your screenshot shows the System Preference panel for OS X. The Macbooks running OS X use Dropbox to sync 1Password. The Macbooks have been syncing 1Password for a few years without a problem. The issue I am having is with the 1Password Pro app on iOS. I have never been able to sync an iPhone (iPhone3, iPhone3Gs, iPhone4) or iPad (iPad2) using Dropbox as they get stuck in the same place as noted above.

Still I wanted to try it your suggestion so I explicitly forced the DNS on the Wi-Fi for the iPad2 and the iPhone4 to use OpenDNS (208.67.222.222). Making that change did not fix the problem. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

It is not related to DNS in any way. It is related to the .ws.agile.1Password.settings "pointer" file in the root of your Dropbox folder. This file is not written (or updated) if you change the name of your Dropbox folder.
  • khad

Please move your data file out of your Dropbox folder, double-click it in Finder, and then use the "Move to Dropbox" button in 1Password (Preferences > General) to force 1Password to recreate the .ws.agile.1Passsword.settings file in the root of your Dropbox folder. Your most recent DR still shows "DropBox" rather than "Dropbox." It may need a little kick in the pants. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_wink.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';-)' />

Just for the record and to make sure anyone finding this thread will hopefully understand my post above.

No screen shot is from my airport time capsule base station. Not system preferences of OSX

I was also reffering to my problems syncing 1Password Pro, I have never had a problem with the Dropbox client on OSX I merely mentioned when I used the DynDNS service it caused problems with the iOS syncing for me I could switch to 3G and it would sync fine but so long as I tried with DynDNS in my router it failed.

Thats where I mentioned I never had an issue with OpenDNS.

Also please note I travel extensively and some of the free wifi and motel/hotel wifi have firewall limitations and I run into then all the time so if I need a sync and it fails I just switch back to 3G. But since you got the caffeine buzz going I sincerely doubt you would have the issue with all those places.

I noticed you tried it so as I said no harm done. If you are ever in the mood and want to watch if fail repeatedly just enter the DNS for DynDNS. I am not posting it here because I don't want confusion. Let me tell you it drove me crazy for a few days till I figured it out. Every now and then I try there DNS just to see if they have resolved the issue the last time I tried was about a month ago.

But note to the team this was more of a shot in the dark and I thought you might find it useful. But since its the Dropbox API I don't think there is anything you could do.

Looks like khad has you sorted out, or he sincerely believes he does

I'll keep your info in mind should I find some WiFi service that is providing a DNS that doesn't play well with 1Password Pro and the Dropbox sync. Fortunately one can change the DNS that an iPhone and iPad is using (provided that the WiFi allows the use of another DNS).

Yea! Both the iPad2 and the iPhone4 are syncing keys as I type this reply! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> Many thanks! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />

Here is how I kicked it in the pants as you suggested:

    0) Quit Dropbox and 1Password on my Macbooks

    1) On the main Macbook

move the 1Password.agilekeychain file onto the Desktop

    2) Start 1Password on the Macbook

    Click [Find Existing]

    Select 1Password.agilekeychain from the Desktop

    Click Open

    3) Start Dropbox

((Click on the Dropbox icon in the toolbar and wait until it indicates "All files up to date"))

    4) Back in 1Password

Preferences -> General -> [Move to Dropbox

    Click Continue

((Wait until 1Password says your data file is now in Dropbox))

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Reset Folder Permissons (just in case...)

    Click OK

    5) ((Click on the Dropbox icon in the toolbar and wait until it indicates "All files up to date"))

At this point the iPhone4 and iPad2 could now sync 1Password via Dropbox.

Because I wanted ~1Password.agilekeychain to be under ~/Dropbox/1Password/ I also did:

    A) Quit 1Password

    B ) mkdir -p ~/Dropbox/1Password/

    mv ~/Dropbox/1Password.agilekeychain ~/Dropbox/1Password/1Password.agilekeychain

    C) Restarted 1Password

    Click [Find Existing]

    Select 1Password.agilekeychain from under ~/Dropbox/1Password

    Click Continue

((Wait until 1Password says your data file is now in Dropbox))

Help -> Troubleshooting -> Reset Folder Permissons (just in case...)

    Click OK

    Thanks for the excellent help! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Its no problem, really just wanted to point out a few things, its all good. As long as you are back using my 2 favorite app. 1Password and Dropbox. I couldn't be happier.

As for confusion well I confuse myself sometimes so I see how easy it would be for me to confuse all of y'all. Sometimes I re read and re read a thread tweaking my post to make sure it conveys properly. Could have been 2 things 1 late hour and having to rise really early this am, and lack of sleep with a new little one in the house.

Sorry for my confusion. Ill be better next time I promise, my kids tell me that all the time too. But I will do it unlike them, well ok they do it half the time.

So I apologize for my confusion, I started not to even post when I saw khad was helping but since your were like any other suggestions. I said why not. I have from memory caught 1 and I stress 1 thing her forgot in a thread. So you are really in good hands.

OK running out the door o work y'all have fun and if I missed it as this is a really quick reply and such get back to syncing.

Huzzah! Thanks for the updates, folks! As long as the Dropbox folder is not renamed again, you should be able to move your data file anywhere within your Dropbox folder and the pointer file will be updated automatically when 1Password for Mac is launched which will ensure that syncing continues to function with the mobile apps regardless of where the data file is within Dropbox. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_bigsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-D' />

The issue is simply that the pointer file is not written if the Dropbox folder is renamed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

You should also see the Dropbox section under "SYNC" in the sidebar of 1Password on your Mac where it was not appearing before. This lets us know that things are functioning properly:

    I am rejoicing now that things are working well! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/emoticon-0123-party.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(party)' />

    [/sub]

BTW: Here is a bug that someone may wish to investigate:

When you cancel out of the Dropbox sync that has been going for few minutes (in my case while it was waiting in the "Loading remote encryption keys …" phase), the 1Password Pro app goes to the master password unlock vault door screen. In that screen, there was a field to enter the master password but without a keyboard! Clicking on the Unlock button generates a failed password attempt notice. Suspending and resuming the app does not bring up a keyboard. One is forced to kill the app to get out of this mode.

On a related point / bug:

Is there some way that the app could detect this hang condition and maybe produce an error message? Or maybe the app should print something like "this should only take a few seconds" because the user is let to believe that something might be happening (because of the spinning lines) and perhaps interrupting the "Loading remote encryption keys …" might be an unwise thing to do ... until it goes on for a LONG time and they kill the app out of frustration.

Maybe there are too many reasons why the "Loading remote encryption keys …" phase might hang to give them an error message that might help them correct the problem. I think at a minimum, the user should not be led into a false hope that something useful is happening.

Maybe the "Loading remote encryption keys …" string should be change to something like "Preparing to sync (this should take only a few seconds)"?

p.s. I received two out-of-band Email messages from people saying "me too". <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_surprised.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Hopefully they will see this thread and it will help them fix their problem. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_doh.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='(doh)' /> It may be worth someone's while to address the hang problem by detecting a hang and timing out with an error message, or by changing the status string. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/icon_idea.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Thanks for the additional feedback. I will pass this along to the developers!
  • Hello,

Although I use 1password Windows version, I'm having the same problem to sync my ipod touch.

I can sync with dropbox between PC's, but when I try to sync the ipod it stays forever in the "Loading remote encryption keys..." message.

I already tried to move the 1password data in and out of dropbox, with no success.

I reset all data in the ipod with same results.

The 1password version on the PC is 1.0.5.189 and in th ipod touch is 3.5.9.

Any other sugestions for a PC user ?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ronald

    Hello Ronald,

I'm sorry that you are having this problem. Can you tell me if you have the .ws.agile.1Password.settings file in your Dropbox folder like this?

If so, can you copy and paste the contents you see when you click on the file in your reply here? It should include the relative path to your data file within your Dropbox folder. For example, mine is simply:
1Password.agilekeychain
If I put my data file in a folder called "Secret Stuff" it should show:
Secret Stuff/1Password.agilekeychain
Please let me know. Thanks!

    Hello Khad !

Thanks for your attention to my email.

I already tried to move 1password folder around (I tried the "move to dropbox option"). Now it's on the root of my dropbox exactly like yours, so the file .ws.agile.Password.setting contains only the name of the 1password folder:

    1Password.agilekeychain

    Regards,

    Ronald

Thanks for providing that information, Ronald! It sounds like the "pointer file" is correctly set.

Please try changing your master password in 1Password for Windows. You can can change it back immediately if you wish, but this will regenerate the 1password.keys encryption keys file.

Afterwards, reset Dropbox syncing on your iPod touch (1Password > Settings > Sync > Dropbox > Account > Reset).

Please let me know how it turns out.

    Thanks!
  • Dear Khad,

When I tried to change the master password in the desktop, I got the error message below, although the password has been changed. After that I tried your suggestion with no success. As a matter of fact, I had already tried that before, as I carefully read this thread before...

After the first uncessfull attempt to load remote keys, if I try again it quickly says "Dropbox syc failed to download remote encryption keys. Make sure dropbox is fully synced on your desktop", and the "Sync Now" button is displayed.

One difference I noted from the previous posts in this thread is the Windows version does not have an option to fix folder permissions like the Mac version, although I don't think this would be the case as the Dropbox app on ipod can read the 1password folder without any problem.

One other detail to mention is when I started using 1password back in February this sync worked ok, so my guess is something broke in the newer release.

Please let me know ho to proceed from here.

Again, thank you very much for your help.

    Ronald
  • Hey there, Rsekkel!

Could you try this? Run 1Password and go to File > Repair 1Password Data.

Hopefully that fixes the issue for you. If not, could you send us a Diagnostics Report? This will help us get a better idea of what is going on. You can do this in 1Password by going to Help > Diagnostics Report > E-mail to Agile... Just send it to support@agilewebsolutions.com and please include a link to your post so we can be sure to see the context. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Hello Brenty,

I tried the file repair, but 1passoword said data was healthy, and I got the same result when I tried to sync.

One new information is I got a brand new ipad2, loaded 1password and I got exactly the same result.

I'm sending the diagnostics file by email, but keep in mind all PC's do sync ok - only ipod and ipad do not sync.

Thank you beforehand for your attention.

    Best regards,

    Ronald
