1Pass extension is extremely slow in IE9

EIKA
edited June 2011 in Windows Beta
Hi guys!

Current beta 195 and previous beta 194 takes too much time for most operations. It takes about 6-12 seconds to run extension window in IE9 (32 bit) and 4-5 seconds to fill L/P pair by pressing Fill login. It also verly slow when I press buttons in extenstion & etc.

Sometimes IE9 crashes and offers to disable 1Pass add-on. Also IE9 offers to disable 1Pass add-on to speed-up launch.

I run on modern and very fast PC - Core i7, 16 GB RAM, SSD, Win7 SP1 x64. IE 9.0.8112.16421. CPU is in idle (0-1% used). No any A/V software installed.

    Hey EIKA,

Thanks for reporting this. I am not able to reproduce the problem on my machine here. I will keep trying to "break it" but while I am doing that, could you please tell me if you are seeing any similar results in the Firefox or Chrome extensions? Also, I don't think it will help much, but it certainly won't hurt. Can you try repairing your data from the File menu?

Please let me know if you have any further information.

    Hello!

Chrome extension is fast! No any issues with speed!

Repair immidiately said that data is healthy.

Looks like IE9 and extension incompatibility issue. IE9 have some protection mechanisms to prevent damage and slowing speed due the add-ons activity. I hope that problem is here.

    P.S.

I do have about 800 records in 1Pass and just few attaches.

    Wow! Well...I have about 200.

I have not seen this problem myself either. Are you using the default security settings? It isn't instantaneous on my machine (just under a second), so maybe on a slower one (or just one that gets more use) it could get bogged down. Scratch that...you have twice as much RAM and an SSD. I have gotten the "suggestion" to disable it from IE9 as well. You may want to try removing the 1Password add-on and reinstalling it. Please let me know how it turns out! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Thanks.

Also if you could let us know what other extensions you have installed in IE9. I've got more than 1000 Logins in 1Password, but haven't been able to reproduce the problem. So I suspect that it may be an interaction with something else in IE9.

You tried Windows 7 SP1 x64 + all updates? If NO, try. May be reason here.

FF extension is fast as lighting in FF 5! It works in real time, no any noticeable delays.
  • I've tried IE8 on 32 bit OS (Windows XP SP3), and IE extensions works normally. No delays, no warnings about slowing down.
  • Thanks for the follow-up, EIKA.

I still can't reproduce the problem on my own system, but I'm running only 32-bit versions of XP and 7.

What precise version of 1Password for Windows do you have installed?
  • Now 1.0.7 beta 203. But they are all the same. I tried all from stable release from June, and betas from 198 to 203.

Perhaps someone else with 64-bit Windows 7 will let us know whether they're seeing the same problem as you.

I've tried other PC with same hardware (excluding SSD) and OS (Windows 7 x64). And IE9 works normally with 1P extension. IE version is the same. All Windows Updates are the same.

Maybe reason in SSD? My keychain data is on HDD, not SSD (it used for system disk C:).

Anybody uses 1P on PC with SSD installed?

SSD may slow down some software (e.g. Logitech SetPoint, ABBYY Products). Tust me or run Google.

    Hey there, EIKA!

You seemed to indicate in an earlier post that the 1Password IE9 extension was working well on your work PC. Has this changed? Are you experiencing sluggish performance there now, or is Internet Explorer just telling you that it is slow?

I have still not been able to reproduce this, either using the stable or beta releases. I am using a desktop with an AMD Phenom II X4 3.2 gHz with 8GB of RAM and also a Parallels VM with 2GB of RAM on my 2008 MacBook Pro -- both running Windows 7 64-bit with all the latest updates.

Do you have other add-ons installed in IE9 or other background processes that you could disable to see if one of them is causing a conflict? Is the performance sluggish after a fresh boot and just launching IE, or does performance degrade over time?

IE ext. worked faster on Work PC after installaion. But after few days of usage IE show me the same warning on Work PC <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> And when it happens, IE extestion has been slow.
Do you have other add-ons installed in IE9
Just two enabled: 1Password and 1PasswordCtrl+\ (from unknown/NA publisher - just FYI);
or other background processes that you could disable to see if one of them is causing a conflict?
Hard work. Clean Windows 7 installation show me about 20 processes. And about 10 on Work PC is third-party processes. And about 20 third-party processes is on Home PC.

Major question - how I should check improving of performace if IE changes time in this warning each time?
Is the performance sluggish after a fresh boot and just launching IE, or does performance degrade over time?
IE show warning about slow extension only from time to time. And time cnanges in 0.5-7 seconds range (never seen something greater than 7 secs).

Hmm. It is beginning to sound like you are not actually subjectively experiencing poor performance.

I get those notices from IE myself from time to time, too, but my actual experience -- in spite of how slow IE is telling me the 1Password extension is -- is very good.

In both IE9 and Firefox 5 performance is identical. I push Ctrl+\ and the 1Password menu pops up in less than a second. I can't tell a difference between the two, except that Firefox isn't actively trying to lobby to persuade me that the 1Password extension is slow. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':P' />

Are you experiencing poor 1Password performance in IE9? Is its response time slow when you issue it commands?

In your original post, you seemed to be saying that it was. Then you said that it was fine on your work computer. Now you are saying that it is slow on the work computer as well. If this is the case, what has changed on the work computer that it is now performing poorly?

Please clarify if I have misunderstood something. I look forward to hearing back from you. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I too see this, and have been seeing it for some time. The performance issue is not in 1Password itself, but in the speed and efficacy of the IE plugin/extension.

This screenshot taken just now. 32bit Windows 7, fully patched, 1.5GB, IE9, 1Password 1.0.8.216. I had removed and re-enabled the 1Password plugin prior to taking this screenshot.

Please try temporarily disabling the automatic check for new versions (on the Updates tab of 1Password preferences), to see whether it improves those start-up times.

I tried this today. It reduced the startup time for the 1Password plugin to about 0.5 seconds.
