1Password user interface re-locking constantly [Air Display app is most likely cause]

Luke Adamson
Luke Adamson Junior Member
Hi,

I'm running Mac OS X Lion 10.7 (11A480e), and 1Password version 3.6.0.BETA-40 (build 31040).

For me, the main 1Password user interface (with the big vault key-hole and sliding doors) is constantly re-locking. I'll type in my master password, the doors will open, I'll start searching or creating a new Login and within seconds the interface will re-lock (doors will slide closed). This happens with extreme reliability.

Is anyone else seeing this? I don't see any posts about it, but it's so frequent, I can't imagine others wouldn't notice it (perhaps I've just missed the relevant posts).

If it matters, my 1Password keychain is stored on Dropbox.

Would love to know if there's a workaround.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, Luke. I'm sorry that you are having this problem. If I recall correctly, one of us here at AgilBits actually had this problem. Let me ask around to see what I can dig up. Thanks for your patience! I'll post back ASAP.

I searched on the forum here, but didn't find any answers.

When I open 1Password and type in my master password, I can start to browse my keychain, however, I will be locked out within 10 seconds.

I did not notice this until I upgraded to OS X Lion. I saw mention of this from other users on Snow Leopard, so I don't think I'm alone, but I've yet to find a solution.

    What I experience:

Start 1 Password

Enter my master password

Browse Keychain

Observe after 4-10 seconds I am locked out again
What I've tried:

Remove the Application Support/1Password folder

Rebuild Datafile (after entering password)

Clear Cache

Reset Folder Permissions
Does anyone have any suggestions?

I had the same problem with OSX Lion Release Candidate and 1Password (Version 3.6.1 (build 31057)). This was occurring with both the desktop application and the browser plugins. Completely unusable.

It looks like it was caused by incompatibility with LaunchBar (v 5.1.2). I upgraded to 5.1.3 which fixed a number of Lion related issues with various applications and my problems went away. I also changed my LaunchBar prefs like the release notes suggested.

Welcome to the forums, John! Thanks for that information. I'm sure it will help someone.

I have had a few confirmations that Air Display and DisplayPad can cause this issue.

For others having the issue: If you have either installed, try uninstalling and see if that helps.

    Cheers!

I upgraded to OS X Lion around an hour or 2 ago. Since then I have made sure I have 1Password 3.6.1 and I normally use FF5.

1Password now autolocks after only around half a minute. This appears to be regardless of the preferences. I have also made sure that the screensaver is not conflicting as that has been set to 'Never'.

I have also done a complete overwrite of 1Password. My next line of attack will be the 1Password preference file. I will update if this has any effect.

Has anyone else experienced this, what might be the likely cause?

    Thanks

    Hi,

Am I to uninstall and reinstall 1Password to see if this corrects the problem? Or Air Display? 1Password is locking every few seconds for me as well.

    Thanks.

I do not personally use AirDisplay, but a Google search seems to indicate that the problem may be solved by (re)installing the latest version. Failing that, removing AirDisplay will fix it.

Interesting. I am using both Launchbar and AirDisplay. Have now tried running 1P without Launchbar running. This made no difference. I will test with AirDisplay uninstalled also.

I don't use any of these apps, but I'm getting the problem too, and it's extremely annoying. It's almost enough to make me switch my default browser to Firefox -- and I hate Firefox!

I use AirDisplay, and have uninstalled, and reinstalled with the latest version available, and the insta-locking "feature" is still occurring, both when using the 1Password application, and within browsers. 1Password v3.6.1 (build 31057)

I have uninstalled both Air Display and Launchbar as well as 1P. Reinstalled 1P and it is constantly locking after a few seconds. Not good. Furthermore I couldn't even use 1P to log in to the forums. Had to do it out of memory. So, my guess is that Launchbar and Air Display are not the real problems here.

Unfortunately, uninstalling Air Display does not solve the problem. Both Launchbar and Air Display have been removed from my system and 1P still locks after a few seconds.

Update: Seems I thought I had Air Display uninstalled, but did not. Ran the Uninstall Script, rebooted and now 1P does not lock every few seconds. Sorry for the hasty comment.

Seems I did not have Air Display properly uninstalled. There is an Uninstall Script that must be run in order to remove it completely from the system. Did that, rebooted and now 1P stays unlocked when I want it too.

This has also fixed it for me. Will have to wait for Air Display fix. 1P more important to me than Air Display.

    Thanks for sorting this.

Having been through the same issue over the past couple of days. The fix linked to below works but only if you are running Air Display at the same time. If so then you need to use the Uninstaller script, which is located in the Utilities folder.

Welcome to the forums, nonrational and DerSiedler!

Air Display is not the only application that we've seen introduce this rapid locking condition on Lion. As a general class of applications, ones that provide video drivers are hitting an OS X Lion bug for a number of systems with different graphics card combinations. I know, it happened to me as well. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I have been in contact with the Air Display developers and they are looking for a way around this OS X Lion bug. They of course have no idea if they can actually change their code in some way to work around the problems but they are trying.

DisplayPad is another application that provides its own video drivers and has shown the same symptom of locking 1Password within a very (very!) short period of time.

Please keep your fingers away from the screen or you may get pinched by the closing lock vault — you have been warned! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I wish there was more that we could do for you, but at this time 1Password is properly responding to OS X signals that tell us we should be locking ourselves, and these 3rd-party video drivers seem to be one of the sets of applications that is confusing Lion into giving us those false signals. Hopefully Apple will address the root issues, or the developers will be able to apply work arounds in a timely fashion.

FWIW - if I uncheck Auto-Lock after xx minutes of computer inactivity, 1Password will remain open. Otherwise the door slams shut in a few seconds. I am running Air Display which is apparently the culprit.

I've also noticed my laptop trying to engage the screen saver at random intervals, and I suspect that's related.
  • Little Snitch is also a candidate to lock 1Password after a few seconds. After Update to 2.4 it works without lock.
  • I have the same problem, 1Password locks itself in about 5 seconds. However I don't have any of the mentioned software installed or nothing even close.

I did a clean Snow Leopard install, Lion on top of that, and I have installed just the basic applications (Office:Mac, iWork, Firefox/Chrome, CS Suite, Aperture). Dropbox, click2flash and Adblock are the "closest" to 1password. That's pretty much all there is on the machine yet.

Happy to help in anyway I can to make this annoying feature go away.

That is exactly one of the symptoms that Air Display exhibits in Lion.

If you uninstall it (or if an update for the application is available that resolves the issue), it should no longer occur.

petriojala, please try disabling "Auto-lock after X minutes of computer inactivity" as slwphoto suggests above. Does that help in your case?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks!
  • I have a 2010 MacBook Pro running OS X Lion. My problem is that the desktop application and Chrome extension keep locking too frequently at seemingly random intervals.

I enter my pass code and 1Password unlocks. Then after a random period of time ranging from what I'd estimate to be anywhere from 3 seconds to maybe 2 minutes, the lock is re-applied. I've experienced this in both the desktop app and the Chrome extension and haven't observed any pattern to the triggering/timings.

I'd been using the latest general release for the last few days but just updated to 3.6.5.BETA-3 this afternoon and the problem persists with this as well.

I have checked to see if my automated timeout setting had been set to something ridiculously low, but it says 20 minutes - which is what I had previously.

Any suggestions on how to resolve or investigate this or is it more likely to be a Lion related bug?

Hello Stephen and welcome to the Forums!

I hope you don't mind, but I merged your topic with a similar thread.

Please review the discussion above and let us know if it helps. If you don't find a fix here, let us know that too.

We'll do our best to figure out what is happening.

No problem - in fact thank you. I did search back but somehow missed this thread ... which I think does help <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I have Air Display installed. I'll have a go at removing that as it has maybe been responsible for some other issues as well and since I only use it occasionally I can live without it for a while.
  • Stephen,

Thanks for understanding the merge, and I appreciate you updating the thread.

I'm torn between being happy or sad that you have AirDisplay installed. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

I'm happy because if it weren't AirDisplay, we'd have more troubleshooting to do! However, I'm sad because the problem does exist, and we do not yet have a fix.

Regardless, you now know that we are aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. We'll call it a "partial" victory! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Uninstalled and/or disabled many screen related apps but nothing helped so far.

For the time being the problem (for me) is solved by unchecking the 3 checkboxes telling 1P when to auto lock.

    Additional:

I think the issue is related to this one, described in http://cnet.co/qnuURL
