Safari 5.1: Autosave prompts to resave login with Safari's autofill enabled

I'm using 1Password 3.6.0 BETA-42 (build 31042) under Lion. I notice that the password prompt interface is different from that in previous versions, but I couldn't find the "Never Save for this Site" button. How can I do this?

    Welcome to the forums, MacChelsea!

    Thanks for asking about this.

1Password's Safari 5.1 extension running in Lion is still some "heavy contruction". <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' /> It is not yet feature complete, and the option to "Never Save" is not currently available from within the browser extension. In the meantime, you can manually the domain to "Avoid Autosave on These Domains" list in 1Password (Preferences > Logins).

I hope that helps. Please let me know.

    Cheers!

I raised this question in the BETA thread but I guess since I'm now using 3.6.0 (build 31043) I should file my case here.

The problem is that the "Would you like to save this password" prompt ALWAYS pops up, even if I have already saved the password, or that I've entered the domain manually into 1Password's preference (at the advice of a reply on the other thread). Take Facebook as an example. I've already entered "Facebook.com" there but it keeps popping up; and so OK I've saved the password (against my wish) but the prompt still pops up.

    It's becoming annoying. Pls fix it ASAP! Thanks! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

    FYI, I'm using Lion DP4, Safari 5.1 (7534.45)

It seems that since I've been using 1P and Lion I'm having to remember a lot more of my "commonly-used" passwords. On many sites I see 1P try to enter my password, only to fail (where it didn't under Snow Leopard) and leave me having to look it up. Sites where that has happened this morning include LivePhish.com and ContextWeb (yes, I know, radically different places!). I also find after I manually login to one of those places it then asks me if I want to remember the password despite the fact that the Extension appeared to have a password to enter there.

I've also had this same experience with a number of websites. Hopefully they are working out these bugs.

Welcome to the forums, Dave. I'm sorry you are also having trouble with autosave. I moved your post along with MacChelsea's and richsadams's into this thread so it wouldn't get lost in the UI discussion. I would love to resolve this.

Thank you for providing those URLs Dave and MacChelsea. My guess is that this is related to the newer domain matching algorithms. What is the exact URL saved in the Login item and what is the exact URL you are visiting? Perhaps saving a new Login would, in fact, alleviate the problem (if I am correct in my assumption). I can't seem to reproduce the issue for my Facebook login. The URL I am visiting matches the URL I have saved in the login:
https://www.facebook.com/
Of course, being a problem in the domain matching algorithm assumes that it happens for every single website. Is there even one website where you don't see this promiscuous autosave behavior? I'm trying to track down the cause of the issue since I can't reproduce it on my own machine.

What version of the Safari extension are you using?
I've also had this same experience with a number of websites. Hopefully they are working out these bugs.
Please let me know the URLs.

    Thanks!
  • The interesting thing is very often the 1password save prompt comes out AFTER I've logged in by myself, which not only makes 1password useless but actually an annoyance.

Also, please be sure you are running the latest beta version of 1Password (3.6.1.BETA-2 as of this writing) which also includes an updated Safari 5.1 extension (3.6.5.BETA-23 as of this writing).

    Thanks!
  • It actually happens to me as well. Every time I enter the site for which 1Password already has saved password and do the login by typing username/password manually (or using autofill from Safari) the plugin asks to save password... not detecting that the web page is already in the keychain.

I'm using exactly the versions of 1Password and plugin you mentioned here.

I'm seeing this behaviour too, running 3.6.1 (build 31057) on Safari 5.1 (7534.45) on Lion.

    Example:

    * Surf to this Agile support forum.

    * Click on Sign In

    * The sign in window comes up and my credentials are entered automatically by Safari (not 1Password, that is nowhere to be seen).

    * Sign in and return to this forum THEN the annoying 1Password drop down appears at the top of the window, saying "Unlock 1Password to save this Login".

    * Unlock, give the login a name, save.

    * If you quit Safari and repeat the above steps, the drop-down appears once again asking you to save.

    * WIthin the 1Password app itself, I've "Disable automatic unlock for 1Password and for all applications" both unchecked and "Never prompt for master password" checked.

This is annoying enough to cause me to disable 1Password on Safari 5.1. Work perfectly fine and as expected on Firefox 5.

I think this is only an issue if you use Safari's user/pass Autofill in tandem with 1Password. I do, and this occurs for me on every site. Safari auto-populates the credentials upon loading the login page. I press return to submit the form, and 1Password asks me to save the login. I say yes. Logout. The identical process repeats. IF I use Command-\ to submit credentials, 1P does not prompt me to save it. This issue was not present in previous versions.

Bingo! Thank you for adding this very crucial bit of information. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't seeing this on my machine, but after enabling Safari's autofill for user names and passwords (and then saving a login in the OS X keychain) I was able to reproduce this.

We have always recommended that 1Password users disable browsers' built-in password managers to (1) avoid this sort of confusion and (2) have better security, but this is certainly not expected or desired behavior.

I will pass this along to the developers immediately. Thank you all for helping track this down. Hopefully we can get a fix out soon.

In the mean time, disabling Safari's password management should resolve the issue, keep you safer, and make your life simpler. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

    Hello Corentin,

I merged your topic with what I believe is the appropriate thread.

I noticed that you are running 10.6.8, but since you are using 3.6.5BETA-23, I am assuming (oops, trouble there), that you are also running the Safari 5.1 browser.

If I've inadvertently merged your topic with the wrong thread, I am sure that the situation will soon be remedied. However, the autounlock issue is not supported in the pre-release software (i.e. Safari 5.1), and I experience the same behavior using Safari 5.1 and Lion.

Scott, Tommy, I moved your posts to the related thread. Please see my post above and let me know if you have any additional questions. You should see the problem disappear if you disable Safari's password manager (Safari > Preferences > AutoFill > UNCHECK User names and passwords).

I don't have a time frame for a fix at the moment, but we do recommend having that disabled anyway (for what that's worth).

I am using the GM seed of Lion and 1Password 3.6.1 build 31057. In Safari I get for all logins I have a prompt to save that logins again. This is very irritating. Is there any solution to that?

Here is a list of sites where 1Password keeps asking to save my login information:

www.neowin.net

forum.agile.ws

appleseed.apple.com

developer.apple.com

forums.macrumors.com

in-ist-drin.de

forums.pocketinformant.com

and every other site I can think of!
Please advice. At the current state, I cannot use 1Password in Safari. It is very frustrating.

IsI there any estimate when this issue will be solved? Of course I have now disabled autofill in Safari and 1Password works, but actually having autofill is nice and I would like to have it back <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Something else about the extension. Is there any way in using the keyboard shortcut to automatically login? When I press the assigned shortcut, the 1password dialog always comes up and I have to always select one of the found entries. Before, that worked differently. I could just use the keyboard shortcut and 1Password would automatically log me into the website I was. This is really not exactly ok, and I hope you will provide a solution very soon.

Unfortunately, as I mentioned above, "I don't have a time frame for a fix at the moment."

Although, we have always recommended disabling Safari's autofill for user names and passwords — though you can still keep it enabled for your Address Book card and other forms — because it makes things...

less confusing ("I thought I already saved that!")

more secure (Google "browser password manager security")
Regarding the single-keystroke login: this is a (very) well known issue that we should be resolving in a future update, but, again, we don't give out time frames for future updates.

I understand your recommendation but as long as the single keystroke login doesn't work, it is better to use Safari's autofill. It works faster and it is easier to just click on a button to login.

I surely have missed that, but why did you change the extension in Safari 5.1? Was it because you didn't have any other choice? At its current implementation the extension is major drawback compared to the Snow Leopard Safari extension.

I want to thank you guys for keeping us informed though! I love 1Password....and I have to say that these issues have made my Lion experience worse than it could be. I am sure you will implement whatever fixes are needed.

The details are all in the aforelinked thread, but the TL;DR version is that Apple removed Scripting Additions in Lion, and we are now using the native Safari extension APIs which are HTML, CSS, and JavaScript-based.

Well, at least it works. And yes, using Auto Fill for names/pass only works with Safari. But for me, that's not really an issue as Safari is my browser 90% of the time.

Apple made some interesting changes in the new Cat. Don't like all of them <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

I'm having the same frequent autosave prompt issue (1Password 3.6.1, Lion GM) in Safari 5.1 but the thing is, I ALWAYS disable Safari's password autofill. Address book and other forms still have autofill enabled (though I just disabled those two to see if it makes a difference), but the password autofill is always disabled. Does autofill need to be disabled altogether or is a fix in the works?

    Thanks.

    Hi Brandt,

    1. I have Uninstalled the current extension from Safari and quit Safari, which is Version 5.1 (7534.48.3)

    2. I have set 1Password to Include Beta Versions in its Check for Updates

    3. I have updated 1Password to the latest release its willing to apply: Version 3.6.5 (build 31075)

    4. From 1Password's Preferences, I have clicked Install Safar Extension.

    5. Safari installs it and reflects its version as 3.65BETA-28

Where can I get 30? Is it even EXPECTED to fix the issue discussed in this thread?

    Hi jaydisc,

Thanks for the additional details. Every bit help! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    First question:

If you followed the update instructions at the bottom of the Safari 5.1 Intro article I linked to in my last post, and you still are only seeing BETA-28, please try downloading the update directly from our website: Safari 5.1 Extension

    Second question:

    No.

Neither update specifically is stated to fix the thread's topic. However, application code changes often produce unintended side effects, so we always want to keep our troubleshooting focused on systems that are using the same relevant software versions. This allows us to compare apples-to-apples and look for any specific causes.

So, although I do not expect you to be "cured" by updating to BETA-30, it is useful to the team to ensure that any additional information you provide to us is done using the latest version of our application and extension. An added benefit is that you should experience less of the other previously known issues with the extension.

If we do crack the Safari autofill enabled mystery, you will likely hear about it in in the Forums or on our Blog first. In addition, there will be an update to this FAQ article discussing the issue: 1Password Autosave and Safari AutoFill

Hopefully, the installation will go great, and you'll have the new extension to use. If you find that it negates the need to edit Safari's AutoFill preferences, please let us know. Regardless, we'll do our best to figure out a way to fix the current conflict in the future.

    Brandt
