A question. We will have to wait for version 4.X of the desktop app for this right? What version of the mobile app will have the USB syncing? Do not know about the others but I will not, cannot upgrade until both the desktop and mobile devices can talk to each other. I WILL NOT AGAIN BE OUT MY MONEY FOR AN UPGRADE THAT I CANNOT USE.

I'm late to the conversation... I learned of the loss of WiFi sync in 1P4 reading initial reviews in iTunes. A reviewer suggested mSecure which I looked into and considered but the holidays... I never had an issue with Wi-Fi sync with 1P3 and I've been using 1Password since version 2, so I was hoping to not change. Thanks to everyone in this thread as you got roustem, dTeare and the agilebits team's attention leading them to action in using their awesome talents.

I certainly do not want to go with the crazy code we had in 1Password 3 where the Mac app constantly monitors the Wi-Fi network in search of the iOS device. Maybe something much simpler where you manually select the "Sync" option from the menu.
Manually select "Sync" would work for me. In fact, sometimes after the iPhone has synced with the Mac and changes occur afterwards, I need to do a manual sync if I want the updated on my iPhone too.
I found something that might allow us to sync iOS and Mac using USB connection without iTunes. This is great because it would allow syncing the connected iPhone without any manual file copying.

It appears that we can read and write in iTunes File Sharing data on a Mac without iTunes. I could write a special utility that will sync the local data file with the device when it is connected.
I have no idea how to code a program, but do appreciate your efforts on a solution to provide an existing feature in 1P3 that meets the needs of your present users to upgrade to 1P4.

Those of us who have an aversion to cloud storage for what each considers highly-sensitive information should have a non-cloud option because one breach is one too many breaches.

... With Wi-Fi sync, I was able to only sync selected folders to my iPhone. I don't know how many users have used this feature, but for me it is essential to sync only a part of my 1PW data to the mobile device. • It was noted by multiple Administrators that the wifi sync was removed because it was not a good customer experience. Speaking as, well...an actual customer, I thought the wifi syncing experience was just fine. I never had a single issue syncing and it was my preferred method. It was a rude surprise to get the new version and find this feature missing.

I post this not to debate if it is more or less secure than the cloud with other forum readers (as these posts have devolved into earlier in the thread). Or, to have anyone try and convince me why I should prefer cloud syncing. My only goal is to let you know that I am another customer who is unhappy with the decision to cut a feature that I used routinely. I prefer not to place my passwords on Dropbox or iCloud. Please do not explain why I should be willing to do so. A non-cloud true syncing option should be available, particularly since that feature already existed in previous versions and worked exactly as I needed it to.

Now I find myself with a new version that I have paid for which has other features I was excited to use (such as universal search) that I cannot sync using an established method.

Please note, like some of the others who have posted I am not wedded to the manual/non-cloud syncing option being wifi. Only that it be a local, non-cloud option. I look forward to a resolution for this. You probably already have the beta testers you need, but I did sign up using the form linked to volunteer. Thanks.

Please note that depending on demand we will not be able to accept everyone as space in the iOS program is limited.

I'm glad my iOS devices are still on iOS 5.1.1.

Otherwise I would have upgraded to 1Password4 without any hesitation when it was released.

And would have been very disappointed about not being able to sync my devices with my Mac using WiFi.

Seeing a USB sync utility as replacement is not what I would have wanted, but given that one had to start 1Password on the Mac and 1Password on the iOS device for the sync it'll probably be an acceptable alternative.

Thanks for listening to your customers. Now I can start preparations for my iOS 6 upgrade <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/happy.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='^_^' />
  • No wifi sync for iPhone? REALLY?!?!?!?!?

DESCRIBE THIS GAP ON THE APP DESCRIPTION. I want my $8 back, or better yet...wifi sync.

    I'm genuinely unhappy right now.

Welcome to the forums, Gerry. I merged your post with the discussion already in progress. As you can see there has been a lot of discussion about this already, but we always appreciate additional feedback. You may want to read the earlier posts in the thread, but I'll give you the abridged version. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The response to 1Password 4 for iOS has been fantastic, and we can’t thank everyone enough! While reviewing all the great feedback and requests, we heard loud and clear that direct syncing between iOS and Mac is important for many people, and we plan to do something about it.

1Password 3 provided direct syncing between Mac and iOS via Wi-Fi syncing, and while it was great in it’s day, it was never perfect. Between the need for manual syncing and networking issues, it did not provide a great user experience. Over the years, our team fell in love with the ease of Dropbox and stopped using Wi-Fi sync altogether. Since none of us used it, and in light of the feature’s problematic nature for many of our users, we decided not to include Wi-Fi syncing when we rewrote 1Password 4 from the ground up.

When we released 1Password 4 for iOS, many people wrote in to explain that direct syncing was critical to their workflow. Some need it because of work rules, some because of regional restrictions that prevent access to sync solutions like Dropbox. Others simply prefer to keep all their data locally without depending on the cloud.

If you’re one of the people who requires the ability to sync directly, rest assured that we’ve heard from you that this is critical to your needs.

We’ve started on a new way to sync data directly over USB and it is already in private beta testing. We’re pretty excited about this because almost all of the support issues caused by Wi-Fi syncing were related to weird network configurations. By syncing directly over USB, we can avoid all those issues. Hopefully, we will never have to ask a customer to reboot their router again

We don’t have an ETA on when USB syncing will be available, but beta testing results so far have been promising. If you rely on direct syncing, please stick with 1Password 3 for a little while longer until the USB sync solution is completed.

We’ll post more information about USB syncing soon. Stay tuned!

  • That's a great start....but the problem is my iPad syncs with wifi just fine using 1password. My Mac works just fine. When I buy a program for my iPhone if a major functionality isn't there, it needs to be CLEARLY noted in the app details when a major function isn't there. To make matters worse, your web site tells me the feature is there with how-tos...but never clearly states that the feature is deprecated.

Your right, the previous sync wasn't perfect But it worked. But it worked well enough, even to give an initial load of passwords.

But removing a major feature without clearly stating that the software is now standalone without warning label is sleazy business.

This isn't a desire or a "nice feature" - its a requirement that I expected to be there. I have hundreds of web sites and passwords...frankly it's the bane of my existence managing them. Im sure I' not alone when I say its "only" $8 lost to the app store, but frankly without the ability it sync, it makes the value of the software zero.

As a customer, I expect one of two things. A solemn word that syncing will be put back in the next version or two (even if its "beta" that must be enabled at my own risk) or a refund. I hate being sold a bill of goods and right now that's what I feel has happened.

Please excuse my "tone". Trust me, I'm a respectful and quiet person by nature. And certainly have mp intention of being a jerk, But when I have been wronged, I will stand up for justice. And based on the fact agile is backpedaling on this issue confirms me belief.

USB syncing is on the way, but I would never encourage anyone to purchase 1Password (or any product) based on claims of future features. On the contrary, I would advise you and others to always use the tool that meets your needs as best as possible today. If that's not 1Password for you at this time, then we will keep working hard in the hopes that one day it is.

Please let me know if there is anything else I can help with. I have passed your vote for this along to the developers and would be happy to pass any additional feedback to them as well.

Many thanks to the AgileBits team for working on a solution to the WiFi synching void. I purchased, installed and starting using V4 on my iOS devices before I realized WiFi synching was no longer supported, by that time, I had entered a few new passwords on my various devices and had no good way to synchronize them all to one good copy so I could even limp along with just using my iOS devices. Having full use of my 1Password on all of my devices was just part of my every day life and I feel lost without my ability to synch everything (especially the copy for my wife's MacBook Pro!) Let us know when you get 'er done!

Welcome to the forums, Jim! Thanks for your kind words and encouragement. Obviously there are ways to sync, but it sounds like you prefer a sync solution without a centralized server (or you probably wouldn't be posting in this thread). Wanted to be sure to cover the bases just in case. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Glad to hear USB direct sync going to be added. Already bought IPW 4 for iOS, but can't use it because of the lack of direct sync. Definitely NOT going to put data in the cloud. The reason to use 1Password is because of it's security, now you store your most important data on someone else's place ... really doesn't make sense. Going to wait ...
  •
I agree that iTunes File Sharing is more of a backup/transfer procedure than any kind of valid "sync" solution.

However, while I do feel some sympathy over the loss of Wi-Fi sync for the people who refuse to put their data in the cloud, I find it an interesting argument because with the exception of relatively few extremely security conscious users, most people are already living at least partially in the cloud with data that is much less secure (e.g. e-mail). ...
In my opinion the discussion if storing 1Password data in the cloud is save leads nowhere. It depends on the user and her/his sympathy for the cloud.

The question for Agile should be: What do our costomers want from us and what do they need in their daily workflows?

And they/we want/need WiFi-Sync. We are used to it and it was the fastest and most effortless way to sync a Mac, an iPhone and an iPad.

To sync three devices over DropBox or iTunes is inconvenient and time consuming. WiFi-Sync with 1P3 was fast and reliable for me. I never had any problems with it.

I'd be more than happy if you were so kind and bring that valuable feature back.

I used SplashID Safe before I changed to 1Password. It supports WiFi-Sync and I can set up my own categories - a feature I still miss in 1Password.

Maybe I have to switch back to SplashID just because you cut WiFi-Sync out of 1Passwords features?
The question for Agile should be: What do our costomers want from us and what do they need in their daily workflows?
Indeed. That is precisely why USB syncing is in development. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' /> Not a single member of our team or the entire group of beta testers used Wi-Fi syncing, so the demand for direct syncing was not apparent prior to the release. But we listened to all the awesome 1Password users and used the feedback to help steer us to USB syncing.
To sync three devices over DropBox or iTunes is inconvenient and time consuming. WiFi-Sync with 1P3 was fast and reliable for me. I never had any problems with it.
Unfortunately a large number of users did not have your experience. It was a very sore spot for folks who tried to use it but could not get it to work without a lot of hassle, and in some cases they couldn't get it to work at all. Wi-Fi syncing just has too many points of failure. If 1Password 3 Wi-Fi syncing was working well for you, though, that is a great thing. That means you can continue using it hassle-free until USB syncing is available for 1Password 4 which will permit a much better direct syncing experience for everyone.

If Wi-Fi syncing works for you in 1Password 3 with your network configuration, I'm not surprised that Wi-Fi syncing works in another product as well. It would be great if every customer had an experience like yours. Hopefully with USB syncing they will. <img src='http://forum.agilebits.com/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Please let me know if there is anything else we can help with in the meantime.

    Cheers,
  • Just want to say thanks for listening to your customers on this issue. I never had problems with Wi-Fi sync on my non-MAS 1Password. I don't mind iCloud but that's not an option for my version and Dropbox is a non-starter for me. I tried Dropbox and didn't like it. It just seemed to put itself everywhere on my computer. Really annoying. Looking forward to the local sync solution. Until then I'll go back to 1Password Pro.

I would also like to add my appreciation to the team for pursuing the non public cloud option like direct sync. I have used WiFi sync with no issues for as long as its been an option. The other thing that looks apparent is that a fair number of people besides me have used it, otherwise you would not have this thread or the large number of support calls regarding the feature not working. Giving us an "improved" local option is a much better solution than just killing the feature because its a pain to support.

I am still on the sidelines waiting to see what the new IOS 4 direct sync looks like. My other big concern will be 1Pwd 4 for the desktop. Will it be MAS only? I know this was another touchy subject when 3.9 came out.

    Thanks again...
  • WTF! I just bought this app on the iPad coz I saw the web article on syncing with Wifi. Come to try it and there is no option for Wifi sync.

Welcome to the forums, Bluebeep! I'm sorry that there was some confusion about this matter. Could you please post a link to the "web article on syncing with Wifi"? My guess is that you were looking at the User Guide for 1Password 3 for iOS, but I'd love to see the link in case there is something we need to update. It would be great if you would share the link so no one else ends up confused about this. The User Guide for 1Password 3 for iOS is still available since there are still many 1Password 3 for iOS users. However, as far as I know nowhere in the 1Password 4 for iOS User Guide, App Store description, or anywhere on our blog is it stated that Wi-Fi sync is available in 1Password 4 for iOS. On the contrary, the 1Password 4 for iOS FAQ specifically mentions Wi-Fi syncing with a link to the most recent blog post on the issue where we clearly state that direct syncing via USB is on the way since Wi-Fi syncing was not implemented in 1Password 4 for iOS.

All that said, we'd love to better assist you. Apple may not issue a refund since the App Store description never says that Wi-Fi syncing is available, but we would be glad to take care of you ourselves. Please email us at your nearest convenience:

  • Hey Agile Bits!

It's been a month now since I first posted my discontent with the wifi syncing issue and I'm glad to hear the USB syncing option it's still in beta testing.

Can you give us (and me) an update on the USB syncing testing? Or maybe there's a better forum thread following the progress of the USB syncing beta? I'd still love to upgrade to the new version and am disappointed each week to hear nothing but PR speak here on the forum.
