Previous versions of the extension, IIRC, would suggest a name based upon the primary domain of the website you were on (https://apples.sauce.com would suggest as "sauce.com" for the name). Now, it seems to be pre filling the entire subdomain + domain.
You are correct. This is something we would like to address in a future update. While you can set the name to whatever you want, having a more useful default is preferable. Thanks for bringing it up! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

One of the first things I found I didn't like in 1Password when I upgraded to Lion today and reset my extensions on Safari, Firefox etc, that I noticed when I load 1Password I can not view the saved passwords by 'Folder'? I had all my password ids sorted by folders, and credit cards under Credit Cards, banks under a folder called banks etc etc. Is there no way to restore this layout under 1Password? Can't easily find anything the way they are listed at present? Sorry if this was already asked or mentioned, but maybe its possible and I am missing the settings? This to me was a quick easy way to manage my types of passwords and I dont like this new folder layout. I love 1Password, to me its a brilliant product and a lifesaver.... keep up the good work! and hope you can help <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Thanks so much for the kind words! You didn't miss anything; folders are not exposed in the interface right now. This is definitely something we will consider though, although I am not sure how popular a feature it was in the first place. I used it myself, but for the most part people just search for the Login they want. Kids these days!

1) cmd-\ only work if you are on a page that has a saved login - WTF? I reinstalled 1Password extension with same effect.
I am sorry for the frustration and confusion. This is on our agenda for the new extension. Since our primary goal of stability and basic functionality has been reached for the most part, we will be focusing on "quality of life" features like this going forward. We're on the case! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
2) cmd-opt-\ does not work. Period. I read you can remap this character string in preferences. Which preferences are you talking about because it isn't in the main 1Password preferences that I can see and I cannot find any specific preferences for the Safari extension.
It is under 1Password Preferences > Logins > Go & FIll Keyboard shortcut. Make sure that the web page has focus. It will not work on a new page or new tab. This is a limitation of the Safari extension API. If it is really not working at all, please try removing and reinstalling the extension.

3) So far I've found one saved password that doesn't register in the extension. It is an internal NAS. I can go to All Logins and choose it, it loads, but won't insert the username and password. When I do cmd-\, I am told there are no saved passwords for the site. Again, WTF? I just selected it out of the list of all logins! I have tried reserving the login. I have tried clearing the cache and rebuilding the data file. Nothing works! https://192.168.1.10...ebman/index.cgi is my internal address that is stored in 1Password for the login. This is the web interface for a Synology NAS.
This is a known issue.
4) Go & Fill used to open a new tab and go and fill. Now it just over-rides on the current tab. If I open a new tab into Top Sites and press cmd-\ I just get a sound and no 1Password extension.
This is a known issue as well. While we still have some improvements to make with our Chrome extension, that is the model for a lot of this type of behaviour. Eventually, we will have the same feature set, interface, and functionality across all major browsers, and this is high on the list.
5) As already stated, I have come to rely on my tags for quickly finding logins. Very disappointed they are gone.
Perhaps not for good. We have some big fixes and additions on the way, but we will definitely consider adding this.
6) I have logins for many gmail accounts. It is now impossible to quickly get to the one I need at the bottom of the list.
This is something we need to improve in the future. Thanks for bringing it up! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Keep the feedback coming! While we won't be able to please everyone, we will do our best to make our new extension as awesome as possible by the time the beta is over! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':D' />

Can you make the popup come up near the current mouse position? I personally have the command-\ set up as a custom gesture on my trackpad so it'd be nice if the popup came up right at the mouse position (like the old contextual menu).

I completely agree with the criticisms of the previous posters.

I just upgraded Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and installed the new 1Password extension.

    It is pretty. Very pretty.

It does seem like the software has lost a great deal of functionality in this upgrade to make it pretty.

Since this is beta software, I'm going to assume that the extension isn't fully cooked. I'll be using the Firefox version of 1Password until the Safari extension gets out of beta.

Note- I've been using 1Password for about two years. It is essential to the security of my online life. I'll stick with you guys as you work out the bugs and make refinements to the software but, my first impression of this software version leaves me very concerned about the direction it is going in.

I don't want to fan the flames of dissatisfaction but I too am unhappy about the disappearance of single-keystroke login.

Glad to hear that Agile are working on restoring it. Roughly when may we expect to have it?
  • Full range of keyboard shortcuts?

How to type them - on internatinal e.g. german keyboards?

How to access Command-\? I can type \ by pressing alt-shift-7. But pressing command-alt-shift-7 doesn't work - and isn't really a shortcut if I need to press 4 keys simultaneously.

Is it just me, or is the login screen in Safari under Lion really ugly? I feel that 1Password is really falling into the design pour le design trap. I wasn't happy with the, if I may say, infantile look of 1Pwd 3.0 (it looks like a kids' toy safety deposit box), and now this is being carried into Safari. What was wrong with the old sober version?
Hey there, manikje! I hope you don't mind, but I merged your post into the appropriate thread.

Thanks for the feedback! To each his own, I guess. Personally, I prefer it to its sibling, our more colourful Chrome extension. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

I am not sure that anything was "wrong" with the old version, per se, except that it simply will not work going forward. We took the opportunity presented to us by having to rewrite it from scratch to give the interface a makeover as well. I am sorry you are not a fan, but give it time. It may grow on you.

(Although if you are still not fond of the 1Password 3 UI years later, maybe not...)

Well, our designer will certainly be glad to hear that you think so! In all seriousness, that is his job. I assure you that we did not pull any developers from coding this to make the interface shiny. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

Correct! We certainly have some work to do. This was developed essentially from the ground up to support Safari 5.1 using the extension API. The devs have been hard at work, and they're certainly not done. At this point, with the basic functionality there and the showstopping bugs squashed, they can focus on adding key features and functionality, and overall improvements.

It will definitely take some getting used to for all of us, but the good news is that over time we will all adapt, the gaps will get closed, and we will get to that sweet spot before you know it. Add me to the camp that absolutely hates the new interface.

I'm a trackpad guy. I don't use keyboard shortcuts frequently. I don't want to change.

The old drop down menu with hundreds of logins based in folders worked for me. Click, slide down through my folder based hierarchy and release. Fast, unobtrusive and simple.

The new extension's interface is awful. It's intrusive, awkward to use and "forces" the user to follow a certain multi-step lengthy approach which they may not want to follow. It's hard to use if you have hundreds of logins and don't memorize them which makes searching hard. I'm sure it works for your designers. You can see by the feedback here that it's not working for your users.

So much so for me that I've gone back to snow leopard and Safari 5.05 and hope you fix it. If not, I'll have to find something else.

PLEASE PLEASE incorporate folders as you move forward. They offer a way to organize a large number of logins in a user defined systematic way. Most of the people I know who use 1Password use folders. They are critical to the way I use 1Password.

Hey there, BermudaAl! Welcome to the forums!

Thanks for letting us know that you would like to see folder support and contextual menus in the new extension. The former has been identified as something a number of people would find useful, and the latter is high on our agenda!

While I don't think the main interface will be changing drastically at this point, we definitely want to make it less "in your face" and have it get out of your way and let you do your thing wherever possible. Thanks for voicing your concerns! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Is it possible to get the old safari extension back?

With ne new extension there are two things that got me frustrated after 5 minutes of using.

    - not supported HTTP auth popups - did work in the old version, very frustrating

    - Shortcut for "fill" opens new extension-window and I need two cklicks to get a form filled out, even if only one login is saved in 1password. In the old version I only needed the shortcut for this kind of logins

I'm used to work with keyboard and not mouse and this worked really well with the old extension. But not the new one.

First I would like to say that I love your product, on the Mac and the iPhone. It has become an extension of the way I work on my computer, in fact I had forgotten how it was to work without 1Password, until now. I have been using this new interface in Crome for a while now, and I don't like it. Now that you have moved it to Safari, I will have to start using FireFox, since that interface still feels "right". There is nothing I can say that has not already been echoed here. "PLEASE BRING BACK THE OLD INTERFACE".

  • I realise the extension is being worked on and there'll be improvements, but I'm glad I updated Safari and 1Password on my home machine first and discovered the changes here. It would honestly destroy my productivity at work. I log into a lot of systems within our particular domain, multiple ones of which share most of the URL and the username and password (machine1.example.com, machine2.example.com, and machine3.example.com for instance), and 1Password isn't seeing any of the saved passwords unless they match the domain exactly. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' /> So my single saved login for machine1.example.com isn't picked up when on machine2.example.com.

  • I have been using your program since earlier this year and find in invaluable, especially as a Virtual Assistant who is given his client's login credentials all the time and has to use them and safeguard them. That being said while I like the pretty new interface, I have a few minor usability issues.

First, I have 1Password set up with folders and tags. With so many logins for so many clients this is very helpful to find the one I need. As an example, I currently have 7 facebook logins stored in my 1P! searching is okay but I would much have access to my organizational structure.

Second, when I clicked on something in the old extension it opened in a new tab. Now it is opening in the tab I am in. Sometimes it will open in a new tab if I hold Cmd, but I would really prefer it to always open in a new tab.

Finally, pages are no longer logging in, only filling in the username and password. I liked it when 1P pressed the login button for me as well.

Thank you for your wonderful program, keep up the good work, I know with any new venture there will be bugs and kinks!

I can see why some people are upset with the change. I was always a fan of the previous integration with Safari, but then I moved to Chrome and became accustomed to the new interface.

I would suggest that, rather than just installing the extension and plunging people into the deep end, have a small window when you next open 1Password or Safari to explain the differences. The exact same way Apple has a short introduction to the new scrolling mechanism in Lion when you first boot. I think that would soften the blow for people and give you a fantastic chance to champion the new features and generally get people excited and thinking positively before they use it. I've had the luxury of using the Chrome extension so I knew exactly what was coming; if I hand't, then I think I'd be pretty angry such a huge change has come about without any explanation (or very little).

Additionally, I would like to see the following tweaks over the next few weeks of development:

Use the same Key icon that you did in the previous Safari extension and the current Chrome extension. The 1P just looks like a place holder, and a key (for me) makes much more sense.

An option to position the window. I'm not too fussed about moving it manually, but would like it to be centered in my browser window. I can see why others wouldn't, so an option in the extension's preferences would be good.

At the moment when I click the 1P button the scroll position jumps to the top, losing my place. I'm sure the Chrome extension didn't do this.

An option to close the popup before I enter my Master Password

Nicer integration with 1Password. At the moment the buttons in the window just look dumped.
Overall though I'm pretty impressed. I've moved back to Safari because of Chrome's (surprising) poor support of Lion.

I am sorry for the inconvenience. The overzealous subdomain matching is definitely something we are working on. Incidentally, I was aware of the iframe issue, but I have found a few sites that work. If you can give us specific URLs to test, we may be able to come up with a solution. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

Ah, good to hear. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' /> For the iframe issue, any JIRA installation will run into it, you can check one out here.

Add me to the list of 1Password-dependent users who lived by the folder structure. Having to scroll through my complete list, guessing what login I'm looking for, is a real pain. Add to that the fact that, with Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard, when I DO select the login I want to go to, it opens in the same tab rather than opening a new tab. This might be cockpit error as I installed Safari 5.1 just before going to bed at a late hour last evening, and don't have access to my Mac here at work, so I don't know whether there are some settings somewhere that I need to adjust to get it to return to that behavior. Now what I have to do is manually open a new tab and then go scrolling through my complete 1Password login list. This is a step backwards into the Microsoft Windows way of doing things. If this is a sign of the agony I will have to put up with in Lion, it will be a while before I'm willing to commit to Lion. My transition to Leopard was similarly delayed waiting for one of my other must-have apps (SuperDuper) to catch up to Apple's shenanigans. Until now, I would recommend 1Password to any and all without hesitation. In its current state, I can't recommend 1Password to anyone. I look forward to the day when I can once again be a 1Password evangelist!

While I must levy my strong dislike for the new Safari extension, I am willing to give AgileBits some time to work out feature parity. I appreciate how much you listen to your customers and that you make software you yourselves want to use. Thank you for this.

That being said, I never liked using 1P in Chrome due to this UI. For one, I am a huge believer in the Apple HIG and I do not believe the HIG is dead as some claim. While the execution of the graphic design is sharp, it doesn't fit in with Safari seamlessly as the previous extension did. This new UI feels like a port. It reminds me of cross-platform software, which often uses what I refer to as man-in-the-middleware, generating generic UIs that serve the developer in maintainability but do not serve the user in usability.

Since I am unfortunately going to have to painfully grin and bear this new UI, it would help to have a few areas polished:

    1) The icons on the bar at the bottom feel like they're painted on. The cut-in effect is largely lost on them.

    2) There is some nasty artifacting occurring with the aliasing of the fonts in the dark grey areas.

    3) Some rounded corner borders are broken at the bottom of some boxes on an item's details view.

    4) Lack of spacing at the bottom of an item's details view.

These small changes will help make this UI easier on the eyes; though if I may again stress, please consider a UI that integrates with Safari seamlessly.

On to functionality, you have covered a number of my concerns in previous posts. Thank you for your prompt replies. If I may voice the key features I am missing in an attempt to affect priority:

    1) OPT/SHIFT keys and combos with the CMD+\ menu. When these return, I really do not want to have to dive into the details view of an item and click edit/fill/delete or have to use some CTRL shortcut to activate these. Please give us back the original keyboard shortcuts.

    2) Filling in identities and credit cards is more cumbersome. It requires significant mouse travel. The keyboard shortcuts help, but I am not a fan of going to the arrow keys.

    3) Lack of DefaultKeyBinding.dict obedience. This is due to the fact that the extension is no longer Cocoa driven, but this is significant. By using custom keybindings, I could invoke the CMD+\ dialog and use CTRL+n/CTRL+p to navigate the available logins. I am hosed here. (Now you can see why I do not like going to the arrow keys.)

I realize Apple has put you in a bit of a bind by removing Scripting Additions support, and I am sympathetic. I am confident that AgileBits will continue to make great software well into the future, but please do not take it personally when I convey my apprehension towards this new direction with the Safari extension.

If I were to sum up my feelings:

It looks, feels, and behaves like a port. I am dejected and heartbroken.

A passionate developer and hopeful fan,

  • What a disappointment. For the last couple of years I have always cited 1Password as my favourite Mac app. Simple, effective, reliable and fast. No longer. The OSX 10.6.8 / Safari 5.1 / 1Password 3.6.1 combination is a disaster. As someone who has hundreds of saved passwords and who uses 1Password well over a hundred times every day I have discovered in the last hour since installing the extension that:

    1. Many of my most frequently used logins are no longer recognised as "logins for this site" ie: without manual selection (eg: www.digitallook.com login area);

    2. Some logins are simply inaccessible because they are located on "popup" type screens (eg: www.advfn.com login area)

Furthermore the extension appears to slow down the previously easy and reliable password selection process yet at the same time (amazingly) also reduces user options (eg: the ability to edit the name of a new login and its location on save).

And of course the other issues regarding functionality and interface already raised in this forum.

Sorry to say, more 'suicide app' than 'killer app'...
  • After a few months with the new extension system (since it appeared with Chrome) I'm still not used to it. Last week I reinstalled Firefox on my Mac and using 1Password was cool again, as Firefox doesn't have the same extension as Chrome and Safari. I'm sorry to say that, but I really miss the old 1Password prompt and the new extension system gives me a really bad + slow experience.

I didn't post a lot of messages in the forums but I think they're all about the new extension. I never had a single complaint about the old one...

    :-/
  • I just started to use Lion in real earnest today and while it has the normal growing pains I have not found anything as nearly as frustrating as the new pop-up panel for the Safari extension.

It is really, really cumbersome. Sure it looks fancy and nice, but the click and drop down was so much quicker. This requires a lot more clicking and so far is the least desirable change to the program. I normally do most of my browsing with Safari but I am going over to Firefox until this is fixed.

If it is not broken, do not fix it. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_smile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-)' />

  • The first thing that comes to mind after installing the 1Password Extension in Lion's Safari 5.1 is a Beautiful Train Wreck! I love 1Password and it's one of my "gotta have" apps. However, this popup thing doesn't do it for me. I want to sign into 1Password, click on the 1P button, choose my site or my login, and be done. Please make that an option for those of us who want 1Passwords previous functionality over eye candy. Just glad Lion isn't on my production machine yet. I have every confidence that Agile will get this ironed out.

The new 1Password Safari browser interface won't let me login to chase.com; I have to open the full 1Password to copy the password and past. Also, I miss being able to launch 1Password from the browser icon.

Please bring back the right-click context menu to let me pick the login info.

This is a Chase issue as this occurred with the old extension as well. Apparently Chase is looking for a click of the login button or pressing enter when in the form.

Can we restore the old menus?

The new system is cumbersome slow and not user friendly. When I am using Safari, I want to use safari ... not 1Password ...the more invisible you are the better ... it should just work ... I should not see what feels like another app pop up ... Convenience sells 1Password ... not ugly great monolithic windows ... and the lack of option to return to the original interface is unforgivable ... almost as bad as some of the options that Lion has failed to give us!
