When I am using Safari, I want to use safari ... not 1Password ...the more invisible you are the better ...
This is an excellent summary of what the design direction should be. Unfortunately, the previous plugin cannot be restored as Safari no longer has support for the interface that the previous plugin utilizes.
  • Just wanted to add voice to the desire to have the contextual menu developed. The old extension was easy to use with one click opening a cascading menu that could be navigated with ease. I typically used the 1P browser button to navigate to site logins, instead of navigating to the site first. That meant one click was all I had to do to get to the site and be logged in automatically. Very easy. The new setup with a 1password window opening is a bit clunky, forcing users to click again to select all logins, then navigate the login menu (I've got a lot of logins) and click yet again to select the site to go to. For me, twice the performed actions than before.

Another suggestion is to bring back the functionality of opening a new window when using the 1P button to navigate to a site login.

Another is to reinstate the option to launch the 1P app via the contextual menu (if we ever get it back). That was the only method I ever used to open the app, as I always have a browser window open.

Thanks for your hard work and looking forward to regaining old functions in the near future.
  • I also agree. This is a MAJOR problem.

I used to go quickly from site to site secure in the knowledge that 1PW was shielding me.

Now I do not get any 1PW auto logins.

I wish I had never clicked that safari extensions button.

When I saw that Safari on Snow Leopard had been upgraded it made me happy to go back, since I loved the Safari extension way more than the Chrome one. Now, Safari has been Chrome'd.

The first site I went to, Meebo, wouldn't fill my credentials. So I deleted the entry from 1PW, and it doesn't even prompt me to fill in the password like it did before.

There have been lots of sites that I visited with Chrome where the password that worked with the old Safari plugin fills the user and password but it gets rejected by the site. If I try it on Firefox, it works. What's going on here???

Hey smcrmo and welcome to the Forums!

I hope you don't mind, but I merged your comments with a similar thread.

Thank you for taking the time to provide constructive feedback on the new extension. There have been many changes necessitated by the removal of Scripting Additions, and I know it's a big change for everyone.

Please continue to visit the Forums and our Blog for additional information.

Thanks again for your comments and the kind words regarding our efforts. We are trying our best with the new rules.

    Cheers!

    Hi

After updating to safari 5.1 (I'm still on Snow Leopard) and updating to latest version of 1Password the "All Logins" tab, doesn't work, if I click on it I get the beach ball and nothing happens,

I have to quit Safari, the Logins for this site tab works and everything else is working, but if I click on the "All Logins" tab as I say its a no go, is this a known issue or any idea what may be wrong?

    Thanks

Upgrading to Safari 5.1 on Snow Leopard -- major disappointment with the new 1Password extension.

All of these defects relative to the previous version have been identified on this forum thread, but I'm not getting a warm and fuzzy from Agile that they are going to be restored...

    1. The 1P button was my starting place for web navigation to any site that needs a login; the hierarchical menu based on my 1Password folders was the way I organized this menu. Now both the menu and the folders are gone!

    2. On a blank tab, the 1P button does nothing: no popup

    3. On a tab with an existing web page, clicking on 1P button and the login for a different site over writes the tab rather than opening a new one

    4. Combine 2 & 3 and there seems to be no way to open a site without clobbering a tab

    5. The Go & Fill from the dock only seems to work if 1Password app is running and unlocked... so it's not a very convenient workaround for item 1

Please bring back a contextual hierarchical menu based on my 1Password folders, and open sites in a new tab!

    Thank you.

Perfect summary of what was good about 1P that's missing from this update (no thanks to Apple, BTW). It makes me think of what it's like using Windows UI when you're used to the Mac OS UI.

I would like to add my concurrence that the new 1Password extension is very much inferior to it's predecessor. Ii agree with many who have written that 1Password had been a very well thought out, very simple to use enhancement (to say the least) to Safari. The usability of the 5.1 extension is very cumbersome. The prior extension couldn't have been more efficient: just click on the 1P button in the toolbar (or select the contextual menu) and you had access to logging in, filling in credit card information, filling in identities or creating a new password. If it was a new site, an easy to use, unobtrusive pane would appear below the toolbar - and wait for you to have a moment to deal with it. The current extension presents an ugly window and requires much more mouse movement or keyboard strokes to accomplish the task. The prior method was so efficient and unobtrusive it didn't disturb the flow of what I was doing at the time.

As someone else said, when I'm in Safari I want to be in Safari and so "Safari things". If I need to interact with 1Password I just launch it and do what is needed. If offers me no real benefit to have more access to 1Password in a sort of mini-version of the application, especially when it so strongly degrades the primary experience.

1Password had been one of the most efficient and useful programs I use. I've used it for many years. And the Agile team is always very responsive. I have strong hope they will hear us again and return an option for the prior functionally of both the 1P toolbar button and the contextual menu.

Seriously people? Have you even bothered to read through this forum topic before posting?

I, too, am not quite satisfied with the current implementation of the Safari Extension, but I realize that Lion just came out publicly YESTERDAY! I know the folks at Agile have been working on this for a little while, but they had years to refine the previous iteration.

Let's just all step back and take a deep breath here. I really look forward to having some of the missing features back, and sure, if these things still haven't been addressed in a few months, let's talk about finding a new solution. But constructive criticism is much more valuable than "this new plugin sucks, put it back to the old way"

    /end rant.

Another that has just discovered the train wreck that is Safari 5.1 and 1-PW 3.6.1 running with 10.6.8 and heartily dislikes it <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':(' />

OK I appreciate that Agile are working on changes so I have to hope they come up with something better. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

    Some observations:

Why the need to access all passwords in the dropdown rather than just the single one necessary? If you need all the passwords you can login to the application directly. Removing this and displaying only the password required would result in a smaller dropdown menu.

The dropdown is currently locked in place and in my experience obscures some login fields - the ability to move it out of the way would be good. The sheer size of the dropdown makes this worse.
  • I also absolutely HATE the new Safari extension. It seems to totally make tags and folders useless when using Safari. I use both folders and tags heavily.

I've attached a screenshot of how I use 1Password in Firefox (and how I used to use 1Password in Safari). It's much quicker than the "vault" that Safari now uses (and Chrome uses as well).

Please, add the menu bar back.

Rant accepted. One comment, though: before this all happened, AgileBits posted in their blog about the new extension about how well it was being received. For me, this put fear in my heart that without a lot of negative feedback (and it has all been reasonably polite, I must say) they would think we all liked it. Well, we didn't, and hope they will do whatever is within their power to make 1Password the best Mac OS App once again. That's what this forum is here for...
  • Oh, I wanted to add an example of why the contextual menus are much better. I'm out of work and I'm looking for a job, so I have a smart folder called Jobs * which lists all the job sites I have to visit on a daily basis. There are twenty five. So, since they are in a folder in 1Password, using the older version of the Safari extension, I could easily visit one after the other and know which ones I've visited and which ones I haven't visited yet. Now, with the vault in Safari, I can't see a list of all the job sites and I don't have them all memorized. So, instead, I have to go to the 1Password application, look at the jobs listed in the Jobs * smart folder and have 1Password launch the pages in Safari from the application. In addition, sometimes when I visit a site, 1Password doesn't successfully log me in, so I have to use the contextual menu to try to log in again, which usually works. But, now since Safari uses the vault, if I go to a website which initially doesn't let me in, I have to use the vault which requires me to use multiple clicks.

Thankfully, Firefox's contextual menus work. But Safari used to be my main browser, and now I'll have to switch to Firefox.
  • Sorry, I don't mean to keep posting here, but I wanted to reply to the person who said that Lion just came out yesterday.

I think the issue is Safari 5.1, not Lion. I'm still on Snow Leopard.

One of my biggest criticism about the vault is that you can't see logins by folders or tags. I think Agile could have programmed the vault so tags and folders were visible/available and you could see logins arranged by both. I'm not a programmer but I'm guessing the omissions of tags and folders have nothing to do with the new version of Safari. The Chrome extension has been around for a few months and doesn't show logins by tags or folders either. So, I don't accept Lion as an excuse for all of the missing functionality in the new Safari extension. Like I said in a previous post, the vault basically makes tags and folders useless. I'm not saying integrating tags and folders into the vault would be easy, but I think Agile has had time to figure it out, since the Chrome extension works very similar to Safari's.

With the current system, it wasn't obvious (to me at least) that the blue bar was a clickable button that submitted the info and logged in. I was clicking on the arrow to the right of the blue-bar (login item) and then going to next screen and submitting from there. Maybe you could make it more obvious (oval style raised button) that it's a clickable item. Thanks.

I really dislike the new Safari Extension. It no longer just "logs me in" when I select the appropriate site.

I'd better off just typing everything out via the browser since you've added steps to the process.
  • Upgraded to Version 3.6.1 (build 31057) today on MacBook Pro using OS 10.6.8. I was surprised when using the Safari menu button for 1Password to see the new panel. My issues are that the panel cannot be moved. On your own login page the login fields are covered by the panel. when using the credit card option the PIN numbers are not displayed and there is no scroll bar as in in the log in panel when the details of a login are selected. My online banking folder is not available in the panel.

    I didn’t realize it either.
  • Why such a big screen ? IMHO login process was much discrete and efficient with previous version.
  • Oh dear whats gone wrong. I use 1Password Mac, PC, iOS.... then I upgraded (or should I say downgraded) to Safari 5.1. 1Password is now almost unusable.

This scrolling dialogue to find a login is dreadful - so unfriendly.

Why has right click gone and how can I get it back please?

I can't seem to fill in half my bank pop ups anymore - 1Pasword seems to want to open new windows all over the place, not complete the form I was on.

Please give me a 'classic view' option, ie the old UI back!

Sorry but this really screwed the pooch. This takes longer, entries are harder to edit and it stopped working with the logmein webpage. It thinks all of my passwords are gone.

I was very surprised today, when I updated Safari to 5.1 (upon the suggestion of Software Update -- still on 10.6.8...), and found that the interface for 1P had completely changed.

I came here to the forum to see what was going on, and have spent the past hour reading all the posts in this thread.

I have to agree with the majority of posters: I find 1P an absolutely indispensable application (how did I ever get along without it before I discovered it?!), which I have purchased in a number of copies for my home computer, and a number of Macs and PCs at work. I recently also bought the iOS version (pro) to have it on all my devices.

And now for the "that said" part which follows the praise in most of the other posts here as well... I am rather disappointed with the new interface. It COMPLETELY prevents me from using 1P in the way I have grown accustomed to. Notably:

    - This is my MAIN complaint: passwords aren't displayed in the hierarchical folder structure under which I have them saved. This is VERY disturbing, as this is the main way in which I used 1Password until yesterday, i.e. by selecting "Go & Fill" from the 1P menu, and navigating through the folder hierarchy to the page I wanted to see through "Go & Fill". The way it is now, every time I decide to go to a certain page, I have to make a conscious effort to remember what I labeled the 1P entry for the page I want to see, rather than the much simpler method of using existing visual cues to select it from a list. Sometimes I can't even remember, and then have to open the 1P application, go to the folder I want, and look for the name.

    - When I do find a site to "Go & Fill", it fills in the login info (at least in some cases; for a few of the sites I tried, the login info was not even filled in...), but doesn't click the "submit" button (at least on a few of the pages I've tried); this always used to work with the old extension, and is for me a major drawback. I'm so used to having this done automatically, that I just sit there and wait for it to happen -- but it doesn't. Then I remember, and go click the button...

Please take these as constructive criticism, and in parallel accept my compliments for creating a truly amazing program. I also greatly appreciate your customer support, of which I've made use a few times since acquiring this software, and with which I've been extremely satisfied every time (I honestly can't think of ANY other company I've ever dealt with, with such good and responsive customer service).

Amidst the controversy surrounding the new plugin, I've discovered some nice things about the plugin as well as some bad things. Here are the problems I have with it:

    1. Spacebar to select login. Previously I'd go to a website and trigger the hotkey, arrow down to the proper login, then hit spacebar. It's a bigger target than the enter key; with enter it's less consistent to actually hit the target properly. It's a minor complaint but it does make it a bit less fluid.

    2. Lack of Fill Only: This is a big one. With a lot of websites 1P doesn't grab all the login info the first time, or the page it logs is a non-login page. I can manually change it but the best way was to go to the login page, do a Fill only, enter the info, then replace the login. With the new extension, selecting a login immediately submits the login as well, and in cases where it clears the new pieces of info I've entered it's impossible to login at all. (yes I know I could copy all the info but that's a last-ditch workaround). I know there's an option to disable autosubmit, but it's an all-or-nothing thing.

    3. Immobile Panel: Since you can't move the extension panel, ever think what would happen if there's a login under the panel? Nope. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

1 is minor, but 2 and 3 make it very difficult to use for me. Unless I'm missing something it just isn't as good as the previous version. Hopefully updates will be coming that will improve it.

Like others in this post I have had issues with numerous sites with Lion and 5.1 most noteably with secure sites. I have tried the suggestion to resave after manually entering the info. I am not crazy out copying and pasting my secure passwords as I am not sure how (if ever) they are flushed from the clipboard's cache, nor do I want to enter a sixteen character random password manually considering I ever some sites several times an hour.

And then there is TD Bank (long a sore spot with me and 1Password). Apparently they you some sort of Javascript triggered by the login button to start the session (as stated by you in another post). This has required me to manually tap the login every time I use 1Password as a workaround. I can deal with that. Now with Lion and 5.1 comes a new problem, 1Password will takes you to the site (https://onlinebanking.tdbank.com/default.asp) but does not fill in the fields nor does the 1Password UI show up. The button in the toolbar is dead. I am still able to login in manually by I can't even cut and paste.

I know for a fact that this Javascript issue is solvable as Roboform 0.9.26 was able to login on 10.6 (Snow Leopard). I don't want to use two programs to accomplish the same task.

Please, I view 1Password as a very valuable tool to enable me to use the most secure passwords possible with no duplication. That should be your core mission. It would seem that too much time os being spent on the pretty interface and not on the core purpose.

You seem to be responsive to many requests, certainly I am not the only one using TD Bank with 1Password. If you want other sites that I have had issues with, please ask.

Finally would you at least answer this question if you can: when I copy a password to the clipboard, how long does it stay there and can it be flushed out in a dump?

I HATE IT. I can't believe you actually made it more difficult to login in to websites It takes 3 clicks to log in now? I can't recommend 1Password to anyone now. I was a huge fan of it prior to upgrading yesterday. And now even if the 1PW app is open you still have to reenter the password on the browser extension? Why? It use to be so seamless. I'd launch the app so I have access to it and then I wouldn't have to type in the PW from the browser. And I use to just click on the 1P choose the log in and boom I was logged in. Now it's click on 1p > click on right arrow by web site name > click on login and then finally you are get what you use to get with 1 selection. Have you even tried this? It boggles my mind why anyone would think added steps would be ANY kind of improvement. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/angry.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

I hate the new extension, and what has happened to go and fill login in a new tab?!!

The Go & Fill keyboard shortcut does not work.

The new popup doesn't even work consistently, most of the time all I see is just a black box.

Very disappointed that you would release a new extension like this -- it should never have come out of beta.
  • While I definitely see the new Safari extension as a regression from the old plugin, I do understand the reasons behind it, and also understand that some aspects of the plugin simply can't be recreated using the extension API's. I took a moment to check what has already been addressed by AgileBits (something that more people should do seeing some posts in this thread), so I'm just patiently waiting to get the one-click Fill & Submit and the auto lock features back.

One thing that does seriously annoy me is the position of the popup. At least give me the option to put it on the right side of the window, where I have had the toolbar icon since whenever I started using 1P.

That being said, I still love 1P, and couldn't begin to imagine having to live without it. I'm also still seriously impressed with the extension as a whole. While not (yet) as feature-rich as the old plugin, it gets the job done and is at least workable, which honestly is more than I expected seeing how limited the extension API's are compared to the old ways. As for the hip new design, I guess it just takes some getting used to, just like the inverted scrolling in Lion. It's annoying to have your usual workflow interrupted by these kinds of changes, but that's called progress. Sometimes it hurts. I, for one, am confident AgileBits will eventually tackle the most important regressions from the old plugin. Just be patient.
  • I have Safari set to open new windows as empty pages. Because there is no HTML in an empty page I can't use the 1Password extension--clicking the toolbar button does nothing.
