The Good News: At least one site where 1Password did not work for me before now works. Thanks for improving the fill-in algorithm. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

The Bad New: I love 1Password and have been using it for several years. I think the Safari extension on Lion is a step backwards in terms of usability. I liked the old version where I clicked on the "1P" icon and, right there, I got a menu I could use to select my passwords.

With Lion, I click on the "1P" icon and this big, large, obtrusive-feeling window pops up that requires me to move my mouse farther to get at the menu, and it comes up with an annoying animation. (I know the animation doesn't slow things down, but it's distracting to have to watch _EVERY_ time I use 1Password.)

Basically, 1Password in Safari went from feeling like a lightweight, easy to use addition to feeling like a much more heavyweight, not well integrated solution.
I prefer the pointing device but I don't want to go all the way across the screen with it. I guess I'm doing it wrong.

Basically, this. I would echo what everyone else is saying. Just because Apple seem to be making things less intuitive and uglier, doesn't mean you have to follow suit. For the record, 'Web 2.0' grads, metal effects and 3D buttons don't help usability, or legibility, and they don't look good either. In fact they look plain UGLY. The first rule of design is 'Less is more'. You guys seem to have forgotten that one. I ditched Google Chrome simply because 1Password was so bad on it. And now you've done it to the Safari version too. At least give us the choice of how we want it to work. Simple, quick and intuitive, or ugly, slow and hard to figure out. I know which one I'm voting for...

I'm still on OS 10.6.8 and 1Password, the beloved original, is working for me on the latest WebKit. And so was the Agile hack. Since they were conflicting with each other I disabled the 1P extension and now the original 1P is working with no problems. I know it's the original because the activation key is in the Menu bar while the extension button has disappeared. This suggests to me that the WebKit developers may be working to resolve some of the issues common to 1P and Safari. Hopefully Agile's and WebKit's developers will meet soon somewhere in the center. In the meantime, if you're still running Snow Leopard and want to use Safari switch to WebKit.

I am a bit disappointed with this extension. Several sites do not work with it (Like UNited.com and Chase.com). The person before saying it was Chase's fault is pure BS. It has worked fine in the old plugin and it currently works just peachy in Firefox. This extension is hit and miss on whether it enters the password or not.

The fact it does not work in private browse mode is extremely annoying as well.

So first of all, hats off to Agile and 1password for a great product. I love it and it is a strong part of my password experience on the web. This love for your product is going to fall into my passionate negative reply below...

Taking off my hat and putting on my gloves... I am a software developer by trade. You should be ashamed of yourselves for forcing this release with out proper testing, both internally and user testing. This has forced me to completely stop using Safari altogether. From a developer perspective, you missed the mark by releasing such a horrendously buggy software. This is alpha quality. If I was in your shoes, I would have kept the ability to run the old plugin as a fall back since these still work in Safari 5.1. The positive is we have other alternatives, such as Firefox for now. But this really really sucks that it went this far and is this buggy. I hope you guys will learn from this <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/skype_sadsmile.png' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':-(' />

I agree with most of the posters on this thread. Please bring back the old UI (or give us the choice). The most annoying feature for me is the need to have to type my password just to autofill a web form using one of my identities. Glad to hear you're taking this feedback on board and I look forward to some changes soon. I really love 1Password (just not it's current iteration!).
  • Although the whole theme is much slicker and nicer looking, it's less FUNCTIONAL. I used to be able to login to any site with a single click: click and drag down the menu to the folder/tag and let go on the login I wanted.

Now it takes an unbelievable amount of time: one click to open the window at all, one click to go to the all logins page, and then either multiple keystrokes to search for the login or scroll up and down like crazy through my hundreds of logins, it's a disaster. I'm sure the keyboard shortcuts are nice, but I prefer to use the mouse.
  • Hey there, 1passwordh4x0r!

As a developer, you are probably aware that there are some major changes in Safari 5.1 (WebKit2, sandboxing, lack of scripting additions, etc.) It is the case that our old extension simply will not function in this new release, which is why we have developed a new one from scratch using the Safari extension framework (which was not around at all until recently -- we have refined our old extension over the course of years).

Given the option, we absolutely would have taken more time to release a final version of the extension when it was ready. However, Safari 5.1 was released for both Snow Leopard and Lion users yesterday, so yesterday it was. Since the alternative was to leave our customers with zero Safari support, we made the decision to make the beta available to everyone.

As users ourselves, we are fully aware of both its benefits and its shortcomings, and are working hard to address these issues. Earlier today we released a new beta extension (which everyone will get any minute now if they have automatic updates enabled in Safari), as well as a beta release of the main 1Password application to compliment it.

We are working hard to address everyone's concerns (including yours and our own). Thanks both for your honest criticism and your understanding, even if you are not a fan of our work on this up until now. We hope to win you over in time. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

  • Created a forum account for the sole purpose of logging in here and saying how very disappointed I am with the interface of the new extension in Safari 5.1. It is a terrible step backward in usability.

Please, PLEASE reintroduce the contextual menu in its original form as soon as you possibly can. 1Password has instantly gone from an invaluable utility to a cumbersome mess that I must use grudgingly. I would really like to return to the state of blissful and secure productivity that you made possible with the earlier versions.

Also, after just having tried to use 1Password + Safari to fill in a credit card number, I also dislike the fact that there are four tabs for Logins, Identifies, Credit Cards, and Generator. The previous version had options on the menu, so it was very easy to select the correct one. Getting to a credit card number requires a lot more clicks, again adding to the "heavyweight" feeling of the current extension.

I'm not making this up, if that's what you are suggesting. I'm saying that this issue is not isolated to just the new extension. Chase seems to be using JavaScript to do something with their form that is causing this, though 1P may be able to work around it. You can even test this by entering your credentials in Chase, bringing up the developer console, and entering $("form").submit(). You'll be sent to a blank page and not logged in.

I agree that the new extension is frustrating, but you must have missed the multiple occasions in which AgileBits has clearly stated that this is not possible. Hopefully our concerns will be resolved soon.

Our new Safari 5.1 extension is still beta, and has both some issues and lacks a few key features, which we hope to address as we release new versions. Please see our blog post for more details.

Already today we have updated it to have a popover menu using the toolbar button (which functions on both the Top Sites list and an empty tab now), so that it can be accessed easier -- especially on sites that use frames.

Just to summarize a few things not currently implemented but on our agenda:

Single-keystroke login is a top priority.
Right-click contextual menus are high on our list.
Automatic unlock is not currently working, but we are working on it!
URLs with port numbers result in Logins not being offered for a site currently. This is a known issue.
HTTP Auth prompts cannot be accessed via the Safari extension API currently, but we hope Apple will add this capability in the future.
If you have any questions, just ask. Thanks for your support! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
  • Oh, and many logins which previously worked no longer work! It says "no logins saved for this website." It even says this after asking me to save my login (which I do), but then it still doesn't work, lol.

Sorry for the multipost. Forums were broken there for a while.
  • PLEASE! put the drop down menu BACK in the icon!

What a mess - this was a near-perfect thing you had going. New improvements are supposed to ADD new features, not SUBTRACT functionality.

You took SOMETHING AWAY, no matter what spin you put on it, trying to explain away how it's supposedly better. NO it is NOT. I've spent 30 minutes trying to recreate a workflow that worked - I do nothing all day but sign in and out of things - HUNDREDS of times a day, and your software was a GODSEND until this mess of an update.

More steps! SLOWER! New learning curve! NO NO NO.

All the new upgrades in the past 3 years were genuine improvements that did NOT change the workflow!

    PLEASE! put it BACK.

DROP DOWN MENU is a one step 1 second fillin!

(sorry for cross post - this is where it belongs)

    Brenty,

I hear you, but I have developed 2 Safari plugins that still work in 5.1.- AutoPB (Auto Private Browser) and URLShortener (A quick and dirty URl shortener - name says it all eh?)... and they are fairly complex.

2 areas I will call out on. First, most plugins work, especially the swizzle stuff which you guys clearly do in your normal plugin. Granted there were changes in 5.1, but that leads me to my second point. Did you not have the developer preview for Lion and 5.1? classdump still shows the API calls in all their glory like all of us plugin developers deal with. Would that not have showed you that you should stick to your guns on the plugin and make the necessary swizzle changes to make your plugin work?

I'm sorry but claiming changes at the last minute is BS. You guys know better than that. Even I had the betas and alphas of this stuff and knew the changes and I'm not even selling my wares...I'm just an open source developer.

My apologies to all readers here... I'm not attacking so please do not take it that way... I'm pointing out the facts and I am happy to discuss this at great length in this forum with their developers at a technical level.

  • Hi. I seem to be the only one asking about this, but I'd like to hear Agile respond:

Why is there no way to access logins by folder or tags when using the Safari (or Chrome) extension? Not having the ability to view logins by tag or folder has nothing to do with Safari 5.1 or Lion.
  • eveningclouds
    eveningclouds Junior Member
Oh, no! I downloaded the latest Safari and reinstalled the 1Password extension when asked . . . and yikes! This is awful. Logins don't show up on an account where I have to check multiple people's emails, can't open the app from Safari, many more steps, uglier UI taking up much more real estate. WTF did you guys do?

1P and I had grown symbiotic, and now I'm utterly lost. I can't even find things anymore. Ach!

Better question. How can I go back to an older version? Do I need to install an older Safari, if that is even possible?
  • eveningclouds
    eveningclouds Junior Member
This just gets worse. Even though I had a login 1P said no new logins existed. Had to start up 1P, look up the password, fill it in on the site. Then 1P asked if I wanted to save the password, so I said yes, thinking well, at least I can just re-create the 100s of passwords no longer functioning.

So I logged out and then tried to login again, and again 1P said no logins saved. Repeated what I did last time. Logged out, logged in again. Same thing.

Then when I went to 1P I discovered that all the logins I had just created were there, now in quadruplicate, and at no time did 1P ever recognize they were there when I went to the site from which they had been created and saved.

What a friggin' mess this is now. I will have duplicate passwords, nonfunctioning passwords, and god knows what other stuff -- when it had been working perfectly just yesterday!!

This is not an improvement you guys, and I must say very uncharacteristic. What, did you get bought out by Intuit or something?
  • I understand Agile's stance that this is beta, and that it wasn't quite ready for prime time when Apple released 10.7.

With that said, I think you really, really, really need to place a warning on your main software purchase page that Mac is not currently "fully supported" as you claim.

I think you're trying to have your cake and eat it too — the 1password for Mac site claims "1Password 3 supports OS X Lion." Full stop. However, as we've seen in this thread, "supports" is a bit of an overstatement when it comes to the main, built in, primarily used browser on OS X. If you're going to repeatedly tell us that our complaints are heard but that this is beta software, then I think you should let potential purchasers know that they are buying beta software.
  • I don't want to join in the debate of how much better things used to be, I just want 1 Password to work. Since installing Lion and Safari 5.1 (both only yesterday):

    1. Not a single website I've tried, including this forum, autofills login details any more - the fields remain blank.

    2. Clicking the IP button reveals that "No logins Saved" for this (or any other) site, although they all appear under the All Logins tab.

    3. cmd-\ now takes me to the 1 Password Extension set-up screen (every time, even though instructions are followed and the IP button etc. appears in Safari).

I am using Version 3.6.5.BETA-1 (build 31070), although 1 and 2 above occurred when using the previous non-beta version. I don't recall using cmd-\ , so I don't know whether 3 was a problem with that version.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I hate the way 1PW works now... It's confusing, slow and if it doesn't offer the option of the old UI, I need a new password app.

    Is it only me?

Has anyone found an alternative ???

I've got windows popping up, asking questions about sites I've had in 1pw for years... This is just plain stupid.

I am still on snow leopard, so I can't blame apple... And neither can Agile !!!

Sorry for rant, but this app is supposed to save time... I'm ready to move to one that does

    Tom
  • Ys I am in agreement. I have a site I have used for ages. Now when I populate it it automatically takes me to ask for a new password. It seems to be automatically populating the field "lost password / forgotten password". Also before I used to go straight from the 1password landing page to the site and it would automatically log me in. Now I have to hit the 1P logo in the browser bar and then highlight the relevant 1P log info. Why has this all changed. I am also on the beta version of 1P which I updated today but still no big improvements. I just want my old 1P back please otherwise I will have to look around for another password storage facility.

    Hey there, jfm429! Welcome to the forums! <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

1. Spacebar to select login. Previously I'd go to a website and trigger the hotkey, arrow down to the proper login, then hit spacebar. It's a bigger target than the enter key; with enter it's less consistent to actually hit the target properly. It's a minor complaint but it does make it a bit less fluid.
I never thought of this myself. We will have to see if this makes sense going forward. On the All Logins pane, the Spacebar enters, well, spaces into the search field, though. We will definitely look into it. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />

2. Lack of Fill Only: This is a big one. With a lot of websites 1P doesn't grab all the login info the first time, or the page it logs is a non-login page. I can manually change it but the best way was to go to the login page, do a Fill only, enter the info, then replace the login. With the new extension, selecting a login immediately submits the login as well, and in cases where it clears the new pieces of info I've entered it's impossible to login at all. (yes I know I could copy all the info but that's a last-ditch workaround). I know there's an option to disable autosubmit, but it's an all-or-nothing thing.

This is a known issue, and is something I am personally crusading for.

3. Immobile Panel: Since you can't move the extension panel, ever think what would happen if there's a login under the panel? Nope. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=';)' />

1 is minor, but 2 and 3 make it very difficult to use for me. Unless I'm missing something it just isn't as good as the previous version. Hopefully updates will be coming that will improve it.
I would like to see this as well, although I don't have final say on anything, of course. I like being able to move the Chrome extension window "out of the way"...even when I don't really need to. It is nice to have the option.
This is quite possible.

As we have mentioned earlier in this very thread and on our blog, our previous means of WebKit browser integration -- scripting additions -- does not work in Safari 5.1 or at all in Lion. After putting 5 years of work into the previous incarnation, we had to scrap it and start over from scratch. Yet we press on. While it is a bit of a setback, the new framework affords us a number of opportunities, and we are hard at work preparing new features and fixes. The best part is that if you have automatic updates for extensions enabled in Safari you won't have to do a thing.

Both Chase and TD Bank both appear to use Javascript somehow in the login process. I don't know if it is unique to banking or others but it appears that you are having difficulty resolving this issue. This problem existed prior to the 5.1 'update' and should have been a top priority instead of this horrible 'pretty' but inefficient interface. It would appear by many of the other posters value 1Password for a quick one click access to sites we visit numerous times a day, not a once a month login to some obscure site. Somehow your priorities of what is important to the users has been lost and focused on esthetics rather than functionality.

I have been a member of this forum (and a happy, contented user) since '09 and never commented until now -- and this is my second post in 8 hours. I am more than unhappy and find myself echoing what nearly everyone commenting here is complaining about. Do the people that make the decisions about the features ever use it more than casually? I think not, or these decisions would not have come about. I can tell I am not alone, in the course of the day at peak I may use 1Password 20 to 30 times a hour(yes once every couple of minutes) to navigate back and forth through several highly secure sites. I just don't have the extra time to play around. 1Password is a tool and does not need the elaborate graphics and animations if they are at the expense of basic functionality. You have stated earlier that there is no degradation in performance as a result of the animations and such, but they sure did occupy your staffs time to design and code all of this -- time better spent on making sure that the program actually does its core mission.

I'll be blunt - stop working on 'the creeping elegance' issues and listen to the users in this post and what they want -- functionality first - elegance and fancy animated graphics later if ever.

    Chase, TD Bank, others please!

Ys I am in agreement.

There is a reference in another post to a new user guide? Do you know where it is? I may be reacting to the "extension" feature - which I have no idea whatsoever why that is different ... I just removed all extensions and restored the PW icon to the safari bar... That might work... But I really need to be looking at some other app... This is driving me nuts

    1. On the screen that shows the saved information and has the "reveal" button to reveal the password, could you add a "copy" button to copy the password to the clipboard?

    2. It would be really nice to have access to folders in the new extension like we did in the old plug-in. I have a lot of logins, and it sometimes hard to remember the names of them to find them with the search in the new extension. It's much easier to find them by navigating my folder hierarchy.

    Thanks!

I am a Chase customer myself, and have used 1Password every day for years. I mentioned in the relevant thread that there is currently a workaround for this issue. While I would like to see this "fixed" as much as anyone else, you seem to have misinterpreted our priorities. The new extension isn't about the shiny interface, although we do have one. I assure you that we did not pull developers off of the project to glam it up.

In fact, our top priority for months has been making sure that we have 1Password support at all in Safari 5.1, since scripting additions are no longer an option. If they were, we would probably be using the same Safari integration that we have been refining over the last 5 years. We definitely have some work to do, but we are on the case.

I hate the way 1PW works now... It's confusing, slow and if it doesn't offer the option of the old UI, I need a new password app.

    Is it only me?

Not at all, Sausalito! There are definitely changes I would like to see myself. The issues you mention are known and will be addressed in an update.
Please see above, kjansen. We are in the same boat. We aren't keeping "the good stuff" to ourselves. We are all using Safari 5.1 and our beta extension because the old one no longer works. We are aware of the shortcomings and have big plans for adding features and making it more enjoyable (and less intrusive) to use.But this can't happen overnight. Which is the timeframe of our latest beta. Safari 5.1 came out Wednesday and we made some changes and released an update on Thursday. There won't be one big fix. We will release incremental updates as we improve the new extension. Please be patient, and see my previous summary for more information. <img src='http://forum.agile.ws/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':)' />
